Treats for a cat who doesn't want to eat?

We noticed yesterday that our four year old cat wasn't eating or filling his litter box. We took him to the vet today and the vet said that when big cats stop eating they can get liver problems. We are giving him the antibiotics twice a day but he still doesn't want to eat.

We've tried his usual food, his normal food with water, with milk, several kinds of soft food, milk and tuna. Of all of these he will lap at the liquid the tuna comes in but doesn't eat much.

The vet said that if he doesn't start eating soon they'll have to put him in the hospital and make him eat. I can't imaging he'll enjoy that.

So my question (after my londwinded tiraide) is does anyone else know of any yummy foods I might try and give him?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi

Your vet is talking about fatty liver disease from not eating. He should be able to give you a syringe and teach you how to force feed at home. Did the non eating start before or after the antibiotics? Clavamox has been known to upset some cats stomachs where they won't eat. If you think that is the case stop the antibiotivs and your vet can start him on a different kind.

Have you tried chicken? Tuna? Coldcuts? babyfood w/o onions?

Was your cat checked for blockage?

It seems like the stronger the smell of cat food, the more willing a cat is to eat it. At the vet hospital where I work our fall-back foods for tempting a cat to eat are the fish flavors of Fancy Feast, and Sheba, which is really rank-smelling.

On the other hand, we find that some sick cats love Hills Prescription Diet A/D, which is bland and smooth in texture and very nourishing. You can get it from a vet.

Cats won't eat anything they can't smell. And they certainly won't eat if they're feeling "crappy" -- you might want to try a very pugnent smelling treat - such as a portion of canned salmon, since you've already tried the tuna... or you can trying dousing its dry food with the juice.

Please ask your vet to run a full bood workup to ensure it's just an infection it's fighting, and not something more serious like kidney or liver failure..

Best of luck to you and your 4 yr old!

He might like purina or Meow Mix. Do stop giving milk cause that causes diarrhea.

You can get him some treats and if he eats some food, even a tiny amount pet him and praise him and say Good boy! and give him a treat.

But keep in mind treats will not replace the nutrients he needs. Further be careful that he does not learn...Oh i dont have to eat cat food, I can get these treats instead! Kind of like a kid...I dont have to eat my lunch, I can have this instead!

I took some antibiotics last year and didn't feel like eating for a week. Hm.

You might try some meat-flavored (no onions) babyfood in a spoon that he can lick. Sometimes warming up food makes it more appetizing -- just slightly warm instead of hot.

Pate or liver paste might work. I had a cat that liked cream of corn -- not the corn, just the creamy part -- in a can. He also liked most cream soups like chicken/corn chowder and New England clam chowder. Plain chicken breast and rare steak might work as well.

    Good luck!

    You've got a pretty sick kitty. :(

    Try this.

Get some condensed milk from the store and the Fancy Feast like the other person mentioned.

What you want to do is to make a thick gravy like slurry of the food and the condensed milk. This will force him to get the other food into his system. You need to be sure that you create "gravy" out of the food and milk mixture.

Be sure that you also have plenty of clean fresh water down for him too.

I hope this helps you out!

    Good Luck!

If tinned tuna or cooked chicken won't take his fancy, I'd watch him carefully - especially as he's not using the litter tray.

I hate to tell you this, but my 18-year-old kitty started drinking a lot, but not eating and not using her tray. I saw her one day trying to use it, but having serious problems and not being able to "go". Initially she was put on laxatives by the vet, but later on it turned out she was very ill, internally.

BUT, she was 18, and I'm not saying that this has to be the reason with your cat!

I'm just saying you should watch his behaviour carefully, and be sure to take him back to the vet if he's not eating or pooing. Or if he seems to want to use his tray, but can't.

He may just have a sick tummy and return to eating in a day or two!

There's a product called "Kitty Caviar" that's disgusting, but even the most picky cats love it.

If your petstore doesn't have it, go to the seafood section of a grocery store and ask for fish skin. It's the same thing, but it smells even worse.

Maybe try other kinds of fish or seafood.
