The actual figure is 8 x 8 ounces glasses.
The reason they suggest eight glasses a day is to remind you to drink water on a regular basis. To be realistic, 64 ounces is actually not enough water.
On a given day if you're not doing much, you should probably drink at least 1 liter every 2-3 hours. If you're active, and especially outside in the sun, or working out, you should drink about 1 liter every hour to hour and a half.
I'm a medic in the army, and on 64 ounces of water a day, most of my guys couldn't even do their job without dehydrating.
The rough estimate of 8 glasses a day is just to remind you to drink water. Things like soda, tea, and so on will help hydrate you, but nothing beats good old water.
Even if you're only slightly dehydrated your performance at any given task can be severely reduced. A lot of people who experience tiredness all day, or sluggishness, are often chronically dehydrated (In fact, most people are...because most people hardly drink any water).
Try to drink a good sized glass of water every hour or two, and you should be ok. Drink more before doing excercise, hard work, or going into the sun. It takes several hours for water drank to really hydrate your body, so once you're thirsty you're already a little dehydrated.
Make sure you're eating too. Drink too much water and you can flush electrolytes (Potassium and Magnesium) and vitamins from your system. This is called overhydration, and can lead to feeling crappy overall, as well as sluggishness and such. If you've been drinking a lot of fluids, and feel kind of dehydrated, eat something. Your body needs it's vitamins, electrolytes and sodium (Salt). It all works together!
Hope this helps!

8 glasses of water is 64 oz's or 1/2 gallon. A glass of water is 8 oz. Not the typical 12 oz glass in every normal household. And you spread those 8 glasses of water throughout your normal waking day.

Really it depends on body weight (up to a point). Generally, divide your body weight by two and drink that many ounces. So if you weigh 100 pounds, you should drink approx 50 ounces per day. Don't drink too much too fast, you can actually get too much water in your system if over done. For a normal healthy adult 64 ounces is probably more than enough.

Its depends on what kind of glass you are drinking through.
the recomended value is 2 liters a day. and divide it into as many glasses as you want. My trainer always tells me to drink atleast one liter water in the morning when you wake up before you do brush or anything. it gives you energy and cleans all acids formed inside your body.
In the begining it is kinda hard to drink one liter alltogether. So you can start by drinking maximum amount posible. and try to increase the amount everyday.

64 ounces.
if that's difficult for you to achieve through the day, you're not alone.
i have found it easiest to drink room temperature water versus cold water because it gives less of a "brain freeze" or "tooth freeze".
drinking the 64 ounces is vital for you to promote clean teeth, a clean digestive system, to keep you regular, and to keep you hydrated.
if you meet the 64 ounces, you will notice a larger amount of strength and endurance, less hunger, and a healthier life style.
