Why does my cat think the bath tub is his litter-box?

He will use the litter box to go pee,..and through out the house he has 3 litter boxes. But..we will find a stinky surprise in the bath tub is we don't keep the door shut. Some times he will use his litter box but acts like something just tried to get him, and make a mad dash out of it, and don't even cover it up. He is a little over a year old, and hasn't been fixed. Other than that he is a great cat, and we spoil him to death.

You are offering him too many options with the 3 boxes. He thinks any container is fair game. Cut back to 1 and be sure to keep it cleaned out daily. Meanwhile keeping some water in the bathtub may help, add a few drops of pinesol or other pine cleaner.

The litter box must be cleaned out frequently or the cat will go in the tub

My cat does it sometimes when his box is not accessible but i noticed too that he likes to lay in there. I think cats like smooth surfaces, plastic bags, boxes. Maybe you should try a different type of filler for his box. Could be he doesnt like the feel of it on his paws! There are other fillers that are not so abrasive as the little kitty litter rocks!

At least it's in the bathtub and not in a corner somewhere.

I have one that used to tear out of the litter box like something was after him. Of course, I think he was trying to get away from the smell. lol. He did grow out of that stage and used his box for all business.

I would think that the multiple litter boxes are confusing him cats generally like having one place to do their business and it needs to be cleaned regularly. Also the fact that his isn't fixed might be playing a part he is at the age that he should be mating and as a tom cat he would run the streets freely, as he is a house cat he is much more confined thus acting out. i would get him fixed you aren't doing him any favors by not.

He probably would like more privacy. Try getting a cover for it.
