How long will it take to see clearer with contact lenses?

I got contact lenses for the first time last Friday. I have been wearing them according to the schedule they gave me. However, I'm still not seeing as clearly as I did with my glasses. How long will it take for my eyes to adjust - or is it possible that they messed up my prescription?

I have astigmatism, but they said that I could wear either normal lenses or toric lenses. I'm going back to the eye doctor on Saturday, so if there is a problem, they will be able to take care of it then.

To everyone who says they don't make normal lenses for astigmatism...

You're wrong. They ARE starting to make them.

    Now to the asker...

It is certainly possible that you have normal lenses. I just got contacts a few weeks ago, so I completely know what you mean. It took me quite awhile to get used to them. For many days, it seemed like they only made my vision much worse. In fact, I still think I'm getting used to them. My vision still isn't perfect, but it is getting better! It's possible that they gave you the wrong prescription; however, I would advise to just stick it out another week or two. If at that point your lenses still seem awful, then it's probably the wrong prescription.

The best of luck to you.

It is most likely the astigmatism. If you have a small degree of it then you can't wear toric lenses. I have -.50 of astigmatism in addition to my nearsightedness so I wear normal contacts. I don't have glasses so I am not sure if I would see clearer with them or not but I do know that things definately aren't 100% clear to me. When you go back you can tell them that you don't see clear and maybe they can try something else.

I don't believe it's true that you can wear normal lenses with an astigmatism. I've always been told that I need to wear toric lenses (I have an astigmatism too). Besides maybe some minor discomfort or dry eyes while you're getting used to wearing lenses, you should be able to see just as clearly with your lenses as you did/do with your glasses. I do think they gave you the wrong prescription.

You should have right away. I know what it's like when you just wear them according to the schedule at first, but you just should be getting used to the feeling in your eyes - you should be able to see clearly. And probably more clearly than you did with your glasses, since the contacts should be a more up to date prescription.

I have astigmatism, too, and wore regular soft contacts. Thanks to you, I googled and now know what toric lenses are!

  • I have never heard of anyone with astigmatism being able to wear regular contacts, but I suppose it could be possible. It's also possible that they might not have gotten the prescription right in your contacts. Sometimes eye drops made for use with contacts will help clear your contacts if you are experiencing blurry vision at times.

When you see the doctor again, he will check your vision and likely adjust the power of the lens or you may need toric lenses.

This is normal when getting contacts for the first time. Especially with astigmatism, it may take several tries to get the power right.

the only problem you should have is getting used to the feel of them in your eyes.

If you can't see clearly it's possible that they messed up your prescription or that your astigmatism isn't being corrected enough.

and yes, people, if your astigmatism is NOT too severe you can wear regular contacts.
