Quiet CPU fan?

I have a problem with my PC's CPU fan, it sounds like an aircraft taking off whenever the computer is on, so I want something quieter. My CPU is (and I'm quoting from the system properties bit on control panel) an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 2.94Ghz 5600+. Is there any particular type of fan I should buy? What would information about the fan should show me that it is compatible with my system?

Would something like:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&it...

or:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&it...

be suitable?

Any help would be appreciated!

Update:

I had a look at the link CyberCommie posted, it appears that CPU fans are sold by CPU socket type, so it looks like my question should be "is there a way of telling what socket my CPU is?"

(not really familiar with this terminology so apologies if I'm using it incorrectly.)

I'm not so bothered about recommendations for brands etc. if I can figure out what it is I'm looking for I can figure that bit out myself.

The second one is what you want, however make sure it is the correct fit for your CPU. An AMD 64 X 2 is either an AMD2 socket, or it could be a 939 socket. They are not interchangable, and only the correct fan will fit your CPU.

Don't get either of them. One is a socket A fan for an obsolete motherboard that is incompatible with yours. The other is a case fan. Go to http://www.cclonline.com/ Navigate to cooling>AMD CPU fans and buy an OCZ Vanquisher for just under £12.00, postage extra. Very quiet and cool. I hope this helps.

if you change the fan on an amd processor from the 1 factory installed you automatically void the warranty on the processor. that's why amd processors are sold new with a heatsink and fan. amd knows that the are heat issues with their processors so they pair them with the kind of heat disipation that ensures that the processor does'nt overheat and fry. so you can choose either a little noise or a fried processor that is'nt covered under the warranty because you changed the fan.

My 3 year old Evesham-made computer has noisy fans. I found it necessary to reposition it under my desk and the noise is now less bothersome. You really don't want to be going down the exchange fan route.

Best fans for cooling , I would recommend the Corsair AF120s or SP120s and Noctua fans.

Have you tried newegg? You can do a power search and select fans that are only less then a specified dB

    This should get you started:

the only way to install those fans is to take apart your power supply. i have done it before, its very hard to do. the screws don't come out easily and you end up with a voided warranty and a non-working computer. but another alternative is to bus a new power supply which is very easy.
