Can your child's regular pediatrician figure out your child's intelligence level?

Or does it have to be a specialist or a children's psychologist?

Update:

This is not for me I don't even have any children yet, but I do have 2 beautiful nieces. It's just my lying butt sister in law likes to make up crap to make her look "special". She said that her daughter's pediatrician said that she had the intelligence level of a 3 year old and she's 2.

That is so funny because I am taking a class on special education and we just talked about this. And no, you need a battery of test to assess IQ. Perhaps she is doing somethings early, but that is not the same as IQ.

We all like to think we have the smartest children. Let her say what she wants, she is not really harming anyone. You will know she is full of sheets.

your child is not a doll that you can decide will be a fashion designer, model, or tv personality. your child is a human being that needs to be nurtured to become the best that they can be. as with any child, the possibility is there to become a great scientist, politician(great ?), teacher, or 'rocket scientist'. at an early age there may be a discovery that your child is a prodigy and is well on their way to a university degree before turning 14 years old.

but life has a nasty way of throwing a curve ball. i'll leave it at that.

once your child gets to about grade 5, then think about taking them in for aptitude testing. but before that, let your children grow up as children. their minds can only comprehend so much, and that isn't very much until they get to be a few years older.

Your pediatrician's concern with intelligence level is simply to rule out medical causes for it not being what he expected it to be. If the child is not as bright as expected, you may be referred to a specialist. Yes, a children's psychologist would be the one to administer such a test.

Unless a child under age 5 is showing unusual abilities such as reading novels on his own and figuring math problems there is no reason to test his intelligence. Any IQ test administered at this young age is highly subjective and consequently not accurate.

If you are worried about developmental delays, then, yes, speak with your ped who will be able to access whether your child is on-track or not.

maybe he said her language was at a 3 yr old level or something like that. Try not to be so hard on her. we are all very proud of our babies and we like to brag-sometimes that comes off looking bad to other people.... and this is your niece so brag on her a little, too.

    best of luck! =0)

It needs to be a specialist, but unless you feel there is a problem, why would you want to put a number/classification on your child?
