Abandoned cat going to new home. Fur badly matted.?

We found a home for this cat that has been around our neighborhood for quite a while. She is very badly matted. We want to do all we can to help this new owner and make the cat comfortable. It is far too matted to be able to comb out. I have some pet clippers. Should I cut off all the matted fur? It is still cold where we live but I think he intends to keep her inside.

Also, see my other question regarding this same cat.

Update:

Unfortunately the new home didn't work out. The guy changed his mind. I'm going to get her groomed and help her as much as I can. I would keep her but my 15 year old cat and my dog are both jealous.

I would take the cat to the groomer and have her professionally shaved down unless this cat is REALLY calm and you're sure you can shave her without cutting her skin. Then - don't laugh - get her a sweater to keep warm until her coat grows out. She actually might tolerate it. I had a Persian I adopted in the same situation - he was so matted his coat was like dreadlocks! http://www.ferretocious.com/cats/chanan/newcat-1.j...

Yes, do cut off the fur. Combing it out will be very painful for the cat. She might not like the clippers but cutting off the clumps is better than pulling on her skin to try to remove them. Her fur will grow back.

My cat went missing for 2 weeks. She came back hungry and matted. My guess she came in contact with another cat. She couldn't get them out so I cut a few out at a time. It grows back very fast. Oh, and she has long hair. I would keep here inside for at least 2 weeks or until you think she has enough hair to keep her warm if going outside.

well done you for taking responsibility for this wee furbabe. I suggest you contact the local cat's protection who may be able to assist with vet costs to have the cat clipped properly. Cats who have been clipped will need to be kept indoors until their fur re-grows and should become accustomed to being brushed during this period. The cat's new owner will need to keep it indoors for a few weeks anyway to let the cat become accustomed to them and its new home, so that will give you a while. They will also need to have her neutered or spayed if that has not already been done, as well as vaccinated and microchipped so she does not find herself homeless again ...

If you cut it off be carefull! Like a previous answer said, you could injure her. If you can't afford to go to the vet just be really carefull removing the matted areas.

Good for him for taking the cat in...

matted fur left unattended becomes more matted and it is very painful. it pinches and pulls. do what you can to remove the matts, even if it means shaving the cat down. his fur will grow back but make sure he does stay indoors

Yeah, just take her to a groomer and they'll have shampoos that will loosen it and make it easy to clip out without having to shave the whole cat. The cat will be mad about it though, so it's probably best you do it before she goes to her new home - better for her to be peeved at you than her new owner, that way she'll settle in easier.

my neighbor's cat got it's fur matted all the time because he loved to sleep under cars where the oil dripped on his back. She shaved his back and he LOVED IT! I mean he was purring and drooling. I'd shave it off, the kitty with thank you :)
