HELP! please i dont know how to put my survery, that has 24 questions about teacher immediacy. its on a 5 scale likert. i also asked the age, GPA, and sex of the participant. PLEASE HELP

IM TESTING TEACHER IMMEDIACY AND GPA

what tests should i run to see if the data is statistically significant? like an independent t-test, or a 2 way anova or something?

i have 100 surveys

also how do i assign what each number means...im on yahoo im, angelina1888, if you could please help that would be awesome.

For a likert scale, just create a single variable ("timm" or something). Then, go to under variable view and click in the box that says "Values" and enter your values there (if you have labels for you values like "1=no immediacy; 5=very immediate").

You'll have to tell me more about what your IV and DV are (is teacher immediacy IV and GPA DV?); you've got several variables, so I can't tell you what tests unless you specify what your IV and DV is. I'm assuming this is for a stats 101 project, in which case you may want your IV to be sex. It is so much easier to do stats when your IV is a dichotomous variable. If you do any of the others as the IV, you may have to do a stat that will be over your head, depending on your training.

    Good luck!!!

    ADDED:

Let me add that if you do teacher immediacy as the IV and GPA as the DV, you could get away with running a simple regression analysis. If you do this, don't bother with the labels- just add in the data as if it was a continuous variable.

I also just caught that it is a 24 item survey on teacher immediacy- in which case you can either add each item into a separate column and the have spss run the total or just add up the total by hand and enter it. Either way, it is a continuous variable and if it is the IV, you will need to run a statistic that allows for continuous IVs (regression, or logistic regression).

If I have understood your question correctly -

    a) you'll need to sum the 24 items about teacher immediacy, into a single scale (i.e. one number for each person). To do this: enter all the teacher immediacy variables (as people have explained above). Then click "transform" "compute". Type teacherimmed (or some new name into the "new variable" box. Then move all 24 questions from the list on the left (under the "new varaible box) to the big box marked "numeric expression". Then use the little calculator button to put + (plus) signs between all of these values. (It will make sense when you see it - so in the :numberic expression box" it would say "Q1+Q2+Q3 or whatever you have named your variables.) The click "OK" when you go back to your data, you will have a new variable with a single number which is the sum of all of the 24 questions.

The correct statsitic to me is pearson's r (i.e. a simple correlation) - both teacher immediacy and GPA are continuous, so SPSS won't let you do a t-test or anova (if I'm understanding your question correctly).

Also, before summing, check that your likert items all run in the same direction and don't need to be reversed. For example the question "How much to you love statistics" with the answers 1=not at all to 5=heaps runs in the opposite direction to "How much do you hates sats" 1=not at all to 5=heaps. So a 1 on the first scale = a five on the second. If this point confuses you, ask again.

You have to have a column for age, GPA, and sex, and one for each question, and for the total score at the end (depending on what kind of analysis you want to do - if this is something very simple, you could just put in the total score. Likhart scales are scored 1 - 5. Put values in for the individual questions and sex). As you have a lot of surveys and only want to find Teacher Immediacy and GPA, I would suggest just putting the total in, or you'll be there forever. A t-test or one-way ANOVA would probably do to compare just teacher immediacy and GPA, a two-way ANOVA could compare those two and sex and age, if you're interested.

The problem with your Likert-type scale is that you have it composed of an odd number of responses: 1-2-3-4-5. Because of that, you can expect to get a LOT of "3" responses, because of the central tendency...that is, the tendency of people to choose the central response. It's like everybody chooses "average" or "the middle."

Change it to make it an even number of responses (1-2-3-4-5-6) so the person is forced to choose a response on one side of the center or the other.

What is the purpose of asking about age, GPA, and sex of participants? Just curious...I assume you have a legitimate reason.

Column: total will be 28 Row: total will be the number of participants Each question on your scale will receive its own column. GPA, age, and sex will also receive its own column. One column is reserved for participant ID numbers. Each participants gets his/her own row. In "variable view" you will choose the option "scale" for each of your scale's questions. You will also assign what each number means (i.e. 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, etc). if you have any questions that were reverse worded, then there is a whole extra step. But, it's complicated so I wont type it unless you need me to, but I will check back to see if you need to :) example of reverse wording: 1. Apples are delicious. 2. Apples are gross. a 5 for question 1 indicates that they like apples. a 5 for question 2 indicates that they hate apples. so, you would need to "recode" them so the analyses are correct. good luck!!
