Someone's outdoor cat in bad shape... what can I do?

There is an outdoor cat who lives in my neighborhood and may belong to someone here. He is very sweet. The trouble is that I don't know IF he belongs to anyone and he has a medical issue that needs attention - some sort of skin problem on his face. It smells infected, his eyes are a little swollen, etc. and I work with pets, so I know he needs to be looked at by a vet. It's been a few weeks, and no improvement so I doubt anyone's treating him. Can I legally take him to the vet, which I'm not sure I can afford?

Update:

No, it's not a wound - it's generalized around his face. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing my own patch-up as I suspect there is something more serious underlying (my fear is leukemia or aids). I can't take him in because my fiance is allergic and we are not in the best financial position as students. And my neighbors are not the type you would want to go knocking around on doors with. Good point, though, that a vet will have a look at a stray for free. I know how the shelter works here - with kitten season coming he'd have very little chance of making it through the system.

take it to the vet and say you found the cat in your neighbourhood and you saw it with an infection....

they can look for a microchip and the charge will go to the owner...

you could even ring the RSPCA and tell them what is happening maybe they can send some one out and collect the cat....

I am not sure of the legal side of things, but this cat needs looked at, will he come to you? if he does i suggest you have a good look at him he may have been fighting and a wound has become infected, this you can treat yourself, clean the wound with a little saline water and use some wound powder. If it looks more serious and vet attention is needed, have you tried knocking on some doors to see if he belongs to anyone. If you get no joy from that i suggest you take him to the vets and say he is a stray that needs attention, they should do this for free, I am so pleased there are other people out there that also take in waifs and strays as i do. Hope all goes well. =^..^=

Take him to the vet asap. And keep him if you can, he needs someone who will love him. Call the ASPCA or the Humane Society to find a lower cost vet.

Feed him yourself, you can look after it outside and put a blanket on the floor for it.
