My 2 year old has started eating the pages of his books?

He usually eats fairly well, but lately has started nibbling on the pages of books that he has been reading. I have heard that when toddlers start eating weird things it is because something is lacking in their diet (like iron or some vitamins etc). I have been to the doctor about it and they just said it's normal toddler behaviour. Anyone have any ideas about this????

Update:

He isn't teething, he already has all his teeth

Very normal. If he starts eating dirt or similar and liking it or going back for more.. that is the type of thing they say could be an issue.

I used to work at a daycare (in the two-year-old room) and we had to take away all the paper books because we had one little girl that would eat them all the time. Toddlers chew on strange things all the time: books, blankets, dolls, fingers, you think of it there has most likely been a child who liked to chew on it. If you are unsure about it try taking away his paper -paged books unless you are reading to him and give him plastic books to look at on his own.

It's sensory learning. He's just exploring.

I work with preschools, and the books in the toddler rooms have to constantly be replaced for this very reason.

When I was little I would cry if I didn't have any paper to chew on. Usually just toilet paper. Nothing bad happened. But my Mom would give me gum, the one that you can chew the wrapper, and i started chewing the gum(even though I couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time...lol)

I would be trying to distract him from the page eating. Attract his attention with real food or a toy or something else. My son tried to eat flowers but I used to reinforce flowers are for smelling and then give him something else yummy to eat!! He has mostly stopped that now.

My son chews on paper. Toilet paper, paper books, paper towels, napkins, cardboard boxes, paper plates, paper cups.... you get the picture. We call him our little billygoat. We just don't allow him to get near paper (although he always finds a way). For now, let your child read hard books. Keep the books with paper pages for when you read to him.

My 2.5yo was the same way. He chewed on paper, books, cardboard, I was constantly pulling stuff out of his mouth! It's gotten better lately, but I still catch him doing it occasionally.

Could be teething if he doesn't have his second year molars yet :)
