Help for a ferel kitten.?

The house next to mine is abandoned. A ferel kitty has fallen into a sewer vent (6 inches wide and about 6-8 feet deep) I called the Humane Society, they had me call the Sewer Co, who told me with all the recent flooding their crews are too busy to rescue kittens. I took some clothes line and lowered it down and tied it to a fence post hoping it will climb out.

Can anyone offer any other suggestions that I could try?

Thanks!

Update:

911 gave me the humane society number. The towel thing may work and thanks for the suggestions. I don't know if a towel is long enough, I can try an old sheet maybe.

Update 2:

*sigh* I wish I would have gotten on earlier and asked you guys... I don't hear it at all anymore, but I did get a towel torn, lowered and tied off with food smeared on it. I noticed the mother cat with 3 of her kittens this morning and she is still weaning them so I don't know if the little guy will go for the food or if he'll make it. I will sit out again this evening and see if I can hear it. Thanks everyone.

You received several good suggestions on rescue of the kitten. If the mother cat is still nursing the kittens, I doubt the kitten will know what to do about food, or even climbing. Sometimes, nature seems cruel, but the reality of the situation must be faced - without help from neighbors, or a fire department, the kitten will probably not survive. At times like this, I wish I had a more postive suggestion to make.

On an Animal Planet show I saw a rescue person put some wet cat food on a towel and lower it into a drain pipe to draw a kitten out.

You should really stay there and pull the kitten up when it makes contact with the food and towel.

Try taking a towel and lowering it into the hole. The kitten should be able to sink its claws into the material easier than climbing a post. Good luck!

try lowering a 8 foot piece of narrow carpet or rug== something the cat can put his or her claws into==and hold on tight when the cat grabs on you pull up= keep trying that= rub some catnip close to the top as encouragement=or try lowering a net of some sort= but i think the piece of carpet will work== don't give up== try your local fire dept, don't call them just run over to the nearest one= good luck, for real, and don't give up that is the key=

Source(s): get neighbors involved== to at least help cut the carpet to size==
