Upper Respiratory Infection: Emergency?

Last Tuesday I adopted a kitten. She has an upper respiratory infection, which so far hasn't been too bad. But this morning she had some green discharge from her nose--which I no longer see--and is having more trouble breathing. She's snorting a lot. I know she was drinking well as of this morning, not sure about eating.

Of course, it had to be on a Sunday. I THINK she's ok to wait until the vet opens tomorrow (and she has an appt Tuesday anyway). I'm reluctant to go to the emergency clinic because I've been hearing bad things about them lately, especially about being left waiting for hours--plus it's a half hour away. That sounds like a lot of stress and not much help, so if it can wait a day I'd rather.

Obviously she's piled on a bacterial infection, but does it require an emergency clinic visit today? I can make sure she's getting food and liquid with a feeding syringe, and I'm taking her in a steamy bathroom periodically to help her breathe.

Update:

It's not a question of not wanting to drive a half hour, it's the stress of her being in the carrier for that time--which is VERY stressful for her--then probably an additional long wait at the hospital, with other animals around to freak her out more.

You're doing the right thing so far, it can wait till Monday if she's able to stay hydrated and can breathe. They'll likely put her on clavamox or amoxicillian. URI's are very common, though hard on some cats and kittens. But if they're eating and drinking, you don't need an emergency clinic today.

It sounds like you are doing all you can help your little kitten for now.

Kitties tend to not eat if they cannot smell and she probably cannot. Try a very smelly food, such as a seafood flavor. Also warm it just slightly in the microwave, stirring to be sure that there are no hot spots. That serves two purposes..warm food can be more palatable and it will enhance the aroma.

Make sure she gets plenty of fluids. That can be water, unflavored Pedialyte or low sodium chicken or beef broth.

The green discharge is infection, so she cannot go long without medications. You say she has an appointment on Tuesday, but if she was mine, I would call her vet in the morning and let them know what you have told us and see if they want to work her in tomorrow or if they feel Tuesday will be okay.

You can also get a nasal bulb like you use for babies. I had orphaned kittens a couple of years ago and of course they had URIs. My vet said I could use one of those to help relieve some of the nasal discharge while the medicine was starting to work. I only did it for a few days before the medicine started clearing the infection.

The danger signs to watch for are if her breathing becomes extremely labored, she becomes lethargic, her gums turn pale (they should be a nice pink color), or if she develops a fever. A kitty's temperature is higher than ours at about 100-102.5 F. But if she feels extremely warm to your touch, her temp may be too high.

I hope kitty is feeling better soon.

    Purrs to you and kitten.

You are doing all the right things. As long as you're getting food into her, it doesn't really require a trip to the emergency vet. Do call your vet first thing tomorrow morning though, he may want you to come in before Tuesday. If you weren't smart/capable enough to see that she's being fed, and taking her into the steamy bathroom, it would be a different story. You've got it under control!

As long as she's eating and drinking, you should be able to wait. Try sitting in the bathroom with her while running a hot shower, the steam will help loosen her congestion. Take her to the Vet asap tomorrow, she needs antibiotics. Keep the ER Vet's number and address on hand just in case, 30 mins isn't a long haul if you ask me.

most kittens die because of upper repitory infections she needs antibiotics right now not tomorrow or tuesday ....they are too young to fight the infection and infections travel............most of these respitory infections last 2-3 weeks and they spread to other animals ........... we have 23 cats and kittens at the shelter they all have upper respitory problems
