I have absolutely no "facts" to back up what I'm about to say, but it is my belief that, if we had accurate statistics, the ratio would be far greater than anyone could imagine. After many years of personal research and experience in dealing with the Trans Community, I think the figure would be much closer to one out of ever hundred people. I've heard the figure tossed about that one of 700 people are in some way gender questioning. The problem in coming up with accurate figures is that many who are actually afflicted with a gender identity issue don't know or understand that. So, how could they be counted? We could get much closer to an accurate figure for the USA if the US Census would include the term "Other" instead of just male and female. So, that's why you can't find any statistics. None can truly exist until someone does the research. Even the other statistics cited by other answerer's to this question are speculative at best.

Here is a good site to check out:

    http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/g/gender_identity_di...

Then I found this data here. Sorry it's not much...hope it helps!

Gender Identity Disorder affects approximately 1% of all Americans.

It is a condition that is neurobiological in nature, and its effects, if not accepted for the neurobiological variance that it is, are devastating to the individuals as well as their family members. Left unaddressed, it leads to suicide in up to 50% of individuals before the age of 30. Even when addressed, if not adressed early enough, it can leave individuals at risk of social torment, ostracism and even physical harm. GID is not a choice, it is a birth variance that can be identified very early in life. Early identification and appropriate intervention significantly increases the potential for individuals to live happy and productive lives. However, treatment costs are very high and currently marginally covered by the insurance industry due to significant misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the nature and course of the variance. Additionally, the social stigmatization associated with the diagnosis leaves many patients and family members afraid of seeking the assistance they need.

All individuals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The neurobiologic variation inherent to the transgender community is not a choice. The Alliance for Gender Awareness is an organization dedicated to supporting the healthcare needs of the community of individuals with GID. Supporting research, healthcare reimbursement, healthcare professional education and social awareness the Alliance will strive to attain our vision for change that will lead to a better future for Transgender individuals, their families and society overall.

    What I found was

    "Prevalence

No recent epidemiologic studies have determined the prevalence of gender identity disorder. In Europe, 1 per 30,000 adult males and 1 per 100,000 adult females seek sexual reassignment surgery (SRS)."
