What Do I Need to Do To Get a Summer Job?

I am a freshman in college, probably majoring in theatre and minoring in creative writing. I have some debt I want to pay off as soon as possible and several plans to travel and study abroad within the next four years.

I don't really have the time or ability (no car) to hold down a real job during the school year, but I do want to work this summer in addition to getting an internship or volunteering at a theatre in my hometown. The only "real" job I've ever had was a contract stitching job at a community theatre one summer, but besides that I have lots and lots of school and volunteer work.

I think I would do well in a retail/food service setting or doing something clerical, but I don't really know how to go about applying. There are several restaurants, hair salons, clothing stores, and other small businesses a short walk from my house.

Any tips? Do places like that usually hire inexperienced students? I'm not looking for anything long-term, just a summer job with somewhat flexible hours to help pay for school and some other things. Thanks!

Update:

Maybe I should clarify a little...I know *where* I should apply, I just don't know how to get an application or my chances of getting the job. Do I just waltz in and ask at the front counter, or do I call? I'm in uncharted waters here!

Apply to all those places where you can walk to work. Tell them you are looking for a job with flexible hours because you are a student. Also ask at the the theatre you had volunteered before and see if they have any work for you. Being close to the environment to which you are pursueing your future career would be ideal, so that you could get info at first hand at how theatre functions.

Sure you can get a job--but dream on about flexible hours. You get the job because you are taking the hours they give you.

If you work at a food place, you will usually be told your schedule the day or week before.

well if you're looking for something that requires no effort, i have a friend who works at build a bear. there's mcdonalds, plu retail stores like macy's or hot topic depending on what you're into. they hire inexperienced people all the time. (not sure about macy's actually, but hot topic does)
