Is it true about flags?
I heard that if you fly a confederate flag in Michigan, that it has to be below the state and American flag or it is illegal. Is this true? I wasn't going to fly a conf. flag above our american or state flag but do I have to have all three up just to fly the conf. flag? Also I would like to add this is not a racial or a political statement it is just a flag I would like to fly pertaining to my redneck Lifestyle.

Hi Randy,
The treatment of flags isn't a matter of law, the Supreme Court has ruled on this several times. Your rights of free expression trump any supposed law that Michigan or any other state would seek to impose.
That said, it is customary for the US flag to fly above all others, and the state flag to fly second only to the US flag.

When flying any flag on the same pole with the U.S. flag, the U.S. flag should be placed in the highest position. Your state flag should be next, and the confederate flag should be in a subordinate position. It's a matter of protocol, not law (afaik). You don't have to have the U.S. and state flags present to fly the confederate flag.
Whether you intend for it to be a political statement or not, some people will take it that way. However, you are within your rights as a private citizen to fly any flag you like on your own private property. I wouldn't encourage it, but you have that right.

Personally I'm against people flying the flag when they don't understand the meaning, which is what it sounds like you want to do. Now you don't have to fly ANY flag with it. Technically you don't have to fly it below any flag, you are to do that out of respect for the Country or State that you are flying the flag of.

I thought the Texas flag was the only one allowed to fly even with the American flag because we were once an independent nation, but it turns out that's just an urban legend. Check out the wikipedia link below, it has info on flag code.

All flags, even state flags should be flown lower than the U.S. flag.
State flags can be flown at the same height if on different poles.
If you are only flying one flag, then the other flags don't enter into it.
If you are only flying the state flag you do not have to fly the U.S. flag.
That is true of flags such as service flags for the military or POWS.

USA Flag etiquette calls for the USA flag to be flown above any other. The only exception is that a Christian pennant can be flown above the USA flag on Navy ships at sea while services are being held.
