How long has anyone had a cat in hiding?

It's been over two weeks now and our young stray is still hiding. She comes out only at night to eat, etc.

We can't catch her, she's clever where she hides.

How long do you think a cat will hide?

My veterinarian had a stray cat hide in his office for 9 months, then it jumped on his lap.

Is she in the house? If so, and she's eating, drinking and pooping, just let her be. Since she was a stray, she's very fearful of people, and it will take quite awhile for her to trust you. As long as you keep putting out food, clean water, and clean her litter box FAITHFULLY, she will come to associate you with CARE. Eventually, she'll decide that she wants some company, and may surprise you by letting you see her, and where she's been hiding.

When she finally trusts you this much, DON'T SCARE her again, by trying to catch and hold her. If she allows you to see her hiding place, you can start to spend time in the same vicinity, sitting on the floor while reading, watching TV, listening to a radio, etc. Anything to let her know that you want to be WITH her, but NOT "CROWD" her.

I don't know how long this will take, but when she starts to let you see her in the same room, you can try taking some chicken or other "smell-good" treat, and see if she'll come to take it from you. BY NO MEANS GRAB at her. That will set the whole process back a long way.....

If this cat is outside........a lot of the same suggestions apply, but it may take longer......She needs a DRY, WARM place to sleep, since it's getting cold, now. Hopefully, she's healthy, doesn't have fleas, and will let you catch her BEFORE she goes into heat and has a litter for you to deal with!

If she IS outside, and you want her to be an inside cat, contact your vet or a shelter, and see if you can "borrow" a "humane pet trap". They'll tell/show you how to set it up to catch her, then you can take her to a vet, get her shots, then take her home and keep her inside, til you can "make friends" with her.......like the 1st suggestions stated!!

Hope this helps and that I covered "all the bases". Good luck!!

*** I just went back and read your "profile" concerning all of the previous posting about this kitten. I'm so sorry that you still haven't been able to make friends. Have you decided on a name, yet? If not......how about......"Heidi"...since she like to hide. It's a nice, sweet name for a sweet kitten. Hope she responds to you soon. I know how frustrated you must be.

I raised Siamese for over 14 years, and sometimes they just are very bashful and don't like to interact with people. So.....please be patient. If / when she decides to be your friend, she'll be wonderful. Good luck.....

I know when I babysit my granddaddy's dogs, my cat always hides because he is afraid. The longest we have babysat them was about 2 and a half weeks. My cat was hidden pretty much the whole time. Maybe your cat is scared of something or it is sick. Also it could be that he dose not like the enviorment he is in.
