okay so i used store bought fudge brownie mix, and instead of using oil i used yogurt to save calories and fat.

then end result was cakey, and not fudgy like i was hoping for my brownies to be. by adding the yogurt and not the oil make them turn out cakey?

sometimes an extra egg can make a brownie more cake-like but so can adding milk or extra milk. In this case you added yogurt, a milk product which made your brownie more cake-like. You can try applesauce as a substitute for the oil but reduce the egg amount (for example if it calls for 2 eggs, use one egg) or you'll get cake-like again. Hope this helps!

The high moisture content of the yogurt allowed the gluten in the flour to develop and expand as it baked. If the recipe called for an egg, it would have supported it to expand with the heat, too.

A heavier batter will produce a heavier brownie. Try using half the yogurt the next time you bake them with no other changes. If it called for two eggs, try it with one only.

The yogurt did not provide the same fat content as the oil would have. The fat content is what makes them denser and "fudgy-er".
