Was this rude and inappropriate?

I have a moronic branch on the family - the sort of people that find it amusing when someone wears glasses, and who like to wind them up by repeatedly asking to try said glasses on.

I wear glasses and, at a family function, an elderly uncle came up and, with that smirk that signals you're about to be treated to some tasteless teasing, asked to try my glasses on.

He was not the first person to ask it that evening and, already frustrated, I replied, "Only if I can try your wig on." Was this rude and inappropriate of me?

I don't want to sound rude, but what you wrote just there is classic. I thought I was reading from a novel or the equivalent. It sounds like the beginning of a great story. Anyway, I laughed so hard when I read the last part my face and stomach aches. Thanks! I do not think what you said was rude because you cannot spend the rest of your life ignoring people when they come out with nonsense like that; sometimes you need to express justified truths to people when they make ignorant comments. Love your screen name and picture.

Absolutely not. When someone is rude first (like your uncle) I see no point in remaining polite. You can get huffy, or simply diffuse the situation with humor and turn the tables, like you did. I think it was brilliant, and will probably stop the obnoxious behavior.

Not at all! :) I like the way you handled that one! :)

People like that annoy the hell out of me, too. Luckily, they aren't my family. Through the years, we've tended to learn how crappy people can be to one another and have tried very hard not to be like them.

I wear glasses also and I can say that would be very rude of someone to ask me.

If your uncle doesn't wear a wig or does but keeps it very low key then no it just shows that a) you have a sense of humour and b) you've had enough of the mick being taken out on you.

I would have peed my self laughing if i were there

No your come back was priceless people like that are great about dishing it out but don't want it handed right back at them. They have a warped sense of humor so always have a come back Good luck

Not hardly. What year is it and how old are these adults who are bugging you about glasses? Come on we will all be old and blind one day to need glasses so I hope they all get as annoyed as they have been up until then.

Was it rude? Miss manners might think so, was it funny? Definitely. I am of the opinion, if you dish it you should be able to take it. So, if he was all set to push your buttons, he shouldn't expect you to do nothing. Good for you for standing up for yourself.

Next time, you could ask them to leave you alone. Good luck.

Source(s): I wear glasses... it's not weird. People wear them.

This branch of your family seem to be superficial as well as moronic.

    Your response was entirely appropriate.

You must be the centre of attention at family gatherings? Anyway, I would say no.

No - in fact I thought that was quite funny. If he was mocking you then I think it was almost an invitation to get him back. Good on ya!
