Two Year Old Climbs Bunk Bed?

I got bunk beds for my older two children (ages 5 & 6) about a week ago. They are doing fine with them...it's the 2 year old! He is a climber! I obviously knew this ahead of time...so we didn't put up the ladder. The older two could easily climb up the end...BUT now my 2 year old can! 2! He is nuts!

So, how can I stop him from climbing up there? Any ideas?

Thanks!

keep him out of the room and let your older kids know not to climb up the bed when he is around (monkey see monkey do). Emphasize to your little one that he cannot climb on the top bunk at all because he will get hurt. Letting him do it when you are there will probably mean that he will keep doing it

Maybe you could find some sort of rail to make the end of the bed rail higher so that he cannot get over it without assistance

I've never actually put two of my children into bunk beds, but my daughter did beg me for them when she was about 9-10. We gave in and got her a bunk with a single on top, and a double that could fold into a couch on the bottom. I don't remember her having ANY accidents, but then again she was a lot older. But a family friends child fell off her top bunk when she was 7 because the side frame collapsed and she was hurt pretty badly. Our boys were also going to be sleeping in bunks when we were staying at my brother and sister in laws house, but my 5yo fell off the ladder and almost broke his arm =/ You daughters will probably love the idea of bunks, but I would be VERY careful. Whenever my 2 little boys get anywhere near bunks, they are trying to climb all over them. I would suggest getting low bunks, ones that are wooden (more sturdy) and either with a VERY sturdy ladder, or a ladder that you can fold up so the 2yo can't climb up and fall. Have you thought about getting a trundle bed? That would be a lot safer than bunk beds, and it folds in when it's not being used and takes up less storage. Or getting a double bed and letting them sleep in it together until they're a little older? Either way good luck :)

I'll agree with the first answer. If you can't keep him out, you should take the bunk down. The serious injury that could result is not worth the chance of expecting a 2 year old to remember that you told him not to do that.

Its going to be hard keeping him from climing but you can keep the door shut to the room but if that don't work and if you are affraid he will get hurt take the bunk beds down and make it 2 twin size beds. Good luck

I dont think you can if you say he is nuts!..lol. If he wants to, im sure he will find a way.

I think you should just take them down. my cousin at the age of two fell out of a bunkbed and got a concussion. He was fine but, it could have been worse. Just to be safe take them down for a while.

  • Other than tying him to a chair you can't make a 2y/o stop climbing. You need to keep him out at all times I guess.
