Question about a possible cat abscess?
My cat came from being gone for a week or two (this is normal for him) and when I picked him up he had a small squishy lump on his chest. The lump was maybe the size of a nickle. It was not warm and did not seem to bother him, there was no puncture wound or anything. I was waiting for my husband to get home to take him to the vet and get him checked out, but he took off again.
Today he came home (it's been about a week and a half) and I took him inside to examine him and instead of a squishy lump he had what looked like what may have been an abscess that was already scabbed over.
The area around the scab was clean and there was no redness or swelling. It was no longer full of pus, and the scab is about the size of my the pad of my pinkie finger.
It's possible that someone who also thinks he's their cat took him to the vet and had the abscess drained. However, if I need to take him to the vet I will. I would be concerned about giving him a double dose of antibiotics if someone else is giving them to him.
If the area stays clean and doesn't seem to bother him should I take him in next time he shows up?
Before you ask why he doesn't have a collar, it's because he always seems to slip them off somewhere; and the ones that can't be slipped off can be dangerous.
A woman I know adopted him off the streets when he was about 2 or 3 weeks old, his mother and siblings were killed. I took him in when he was 5 weeks old and continued to hand raise him. He and my dog became really good friends, so when my dog went out so did he. Of course dogs you can keep in a fenced in yard, cats...not so much.
He loved being outside and I didn't mind it once he was a bit older. He stayed home during most of the winter but now that it's Spring/Summer he wants to be out all the time. Which is fine, because he likes to bite and scratch the kids because he gets jealous, lol.
So, with him being gone for 1 or 2 weeks at a time now I assume that he is being fed elsewhere. He is very friendly with adults so I wouldn't be surprised if someone just assumed he was a stray and he is now their's to feed and keep.

I don't know if its the same with cats as it is with dogs, but my puppy got into a fight with another dog (its possible your cat got bit) and where she got bit, something underher skin raised up and filled with fluid...
I think I remember the vet saying its not that dangerous and it should drain in a few days...
it looks like maybe your cat got into another fight, or the lump got punctured somehow and it drained...
I personally wouldn't be TOO worried, but taking them to the vet can never hurt...
you should tell him about the possibility of the cat having two owners, and maybe they can do some sort of test to see if he's already on antibiotics...

If it's clean and dry and not infected, I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like it'll heal fine.

If it seems to be healing, I would leave it. However I'm intrigued to know why he may have two owners?
