Having been in law enforcement and been very aware of the high rate of crimes against women...?
I cannot understand why so many women are so unprepared to defend themselves and have such a victim mentality. Several past girlfriends and now my wife tend to think about the possibility of being assaulted, raped, or murdered in terms of "I hope it never happens to me" or "I'll just do whatever he wants just to survive". What is that? If women armed themselves, and locked their doors and were prepared to fight, less would be victims. Can some women out there enlighten me on what goes through your heads about these situations?
Thanks for you answers. I'm referring to an obvious attempt to enter ones home or obvious attempt at kidnapping or rape. Men think of kill the MF... but women think, please don't hurt me even though that is exactly what is going to happen if you don't fight.
Going in groups and carrying keys or a knife is the thinking ahead and being aware that I'm referring to. That is awesome! More women need to plan ahead and realize that it CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. I'm not saying walk around every day afraid, but if you know you will have to walk through a dark parking lot alone, be aware of your surroundings and have a small pocket knife in your hand, look in your car before you get in and be in survival mode, not victim mode.
I'm a big guy, but I still have guns for home defense and alarm system, video surveillance is great to. Just having a knife at your bedside and locking the doors would double someone's chance of surviving a break-in or attack.
OK. So, the bottom line to me is that I want women to take more control over their own safety. I want women to realize that thinking ahead and admitting the possibility, even it may be very remote, that they may be targeted to be a victim of the demented men of the world. I pray they will take action ahead of time to prevent themselves from being a victim. Think like a fighter and a survivor not a victim. Thanks for your comments.

I think that more and more women are actually starting to take measures to protect themselves. One of the others answers mentioned the possibility there may not be enough proof that the woman was going to be raped. However, what's worse...being raped and beaten (maybe even killed) or taking a stand against crime and maybe going to jail? Doing nothing teaches them nothing.
Most women are raped by someone they know. If the woman gives the person a real smackdown, maybe they'll think twice about ever doing it again.

You can't "prove" you are being raped or abused. And the police are not required to believe you or care about you. The police may even encourage abuse against you, if you were once an inmate, for example.
Her best bet is to run/hide. Spend more time with other women. Its much more effective. That isn't a victim mentality, that's just what best gets you quickly out of a terrible situation.

Im 18 and all of 5'2 and I am very aware of this. I always walk with a key in between my fingers when I walk to my car at night or around campus. But lets be honest, would a rape whistle really work? I dont think so.
Also, the attacker, in my case is probab

Women are smaller and physically weaker than most of their attackers. They are smaller and weaker than most men. They are "trained" to be feminine.
As a smaller than average male, I know some of my limitations. I know that in my condition I cannot outrun most attackers. I know that I cannot physically overpower most attackers. I plan to hide if possible. If I have to fight, I plan to inflict as much damage as possible before my demise. There is a chance I could win. There is also a chance that the attacker doesn't want to risk injury.
Again, my mentality is not that of a woman's. I am naturally a civilized and violent person. It doesn't bother me to kill game for food. It doesn't bother me to defend myself. It's just not realistic that I can defend myself without being armed.
