What percentage of the cat population is male?
We have always had far more male cats than females and it just struck me that I we never went out of way to select males.
Does anyone know if there is a higher percentage of males in the cat population than females?
Okay, I thought there would be the same distribution of males and females in cats as in any other animal but I thought I'd ask since we've had 26 cats and only 7 were females.
Now, you have to understand that a lot of the cats were not chosen by us - they were cats we adopted because they were headed for a pound - such as a pair of litter mates, one of which had just been diagnosed with diabetes.
We have also taken in 9 feral cats over the years and there was no choice of sex involved there - you take them as they come.
As to biology, yes took it, as well as some higher courses and 76 hours towards a B.S. in Physics.
I was lured away by the siren song of computers before I finished my degree :-)
Meant to add - we trapped and tamed a litter of four ferals kittens and they were all males and that got me to thinking about the disproportional number of male cats we have had.

Did you ever take biology? If not than XY equals a boy, and XX equals a girl. Now when these two cats mate, One chromosome from the male and one chromosome from the female will join. Either the male's "X" or the "Y" is going to go to the female's "X". So now if the male's "X' chromosome joins with the female's "X" chromosome than you have a girl cat. If the males "Y" chromosome joins with the female's "X" chromosome than you have an "XY", which is a male. Basically it is a 50/50 chance of a boy or a girl being born.

It's actually about 50/50, just like most species of animals. You just happened to have had more males than females!

I'd say about similar to half. I've had four female cats and only one male. My eldest female cat gave birth to six girls and one boy (in two seperate litters)
