Something is going wrong with my cats ear infection...?
Hi guys. My cat was "diagnosed" with a bacterial ear infection on 7/6/09. I was given Tresaderm and a cleaning solution. I was told to administer the meds 2x's a day and only did so once a day.( scheduling) :0( I kept the ear clean every other day and when I noticed things wern't really improving I asked my neighbor to please come and administer the 2nd dosing. Well, today is going on day 18. She is not that much better. I checked out the med, they talk of having allergies to the meds. Im wondering if maybe the vet was wrong??? My kitty is 13, was weeping at the vet and (she is all white and easily turns pink/red) was excessively red on her ears, nose and whites of her eyes. For this reason she only did a swab of the ear wax and found "lots of bacteria" but never looked into her ear with that magnifying tool. I have also been administering the drops to the other ear as informed but now it is also "irritated" and has a small scab like she has been scratching at it. Im nervous.. the website for the med says don't administer past 1 week. She told me 2 and im allowed a refill!!!! (wth?) Please help... has anyone had issues like this? Do I need a new vet???
*** Guys, PLEASE don't be critical or rude. I am very worried and doing the best I can! I have had her for 11 years (From the pound) and this is the ONLY thing that has ever happened. So, in the nicest way possilbe **** OFF!***

You don't mention whether or not you have talked to the vet about how your cat is doing on the medication that she prescribed. Before changing vets, simply call your vet and describe to her what you've described to us. It is definitely possible that she's allergic to something in the medicine, especially since the other non infected ear seems irritated now.
You sound like a very caring cat owner to me. I'm so sorry that you had to endure all those callus and uncaring comments. It's not easy to administer medication to cats, and it's clear to me that you are doing your best. Wow -- I can't believe how rude those people were...just ignore them. (Assume that those thumbs down for those people are from me!)
Before changing vets, call your vet. I'm sure that you should have seen some improvement by now. Since you haven't seen improvement, and are actually having more problems, your vet should definitely know. If the vet dismisses your concerns and simply tells you to wait 2 more weeks, then consider a second opinion. Your vet should take your concerns seriously and suggest taking another look at your cat. If she doesn't do that, then try another vet.
Good luck -- it is so frustrating when pets are under the weather. Hang in there!

First of all, did you tell your vet ALL of these symptoms? You see your cat everyday and must tell the vet everything because he didn't witness any of these things happening. Its hard for him to determine what's going on just by seeing the cat for 15-20 minutes. It IS possible your vet could have incorrectly diagnosed kitty. My cat had a uri and eye infection and though the uri went away, the eye infection didn't. The vet kept giving us different meds to try and he said there's not much else I can do. We took the kitty to two other vets (for a second and third opinion) and finally the third vet declared this is a chronic eye infection that will not go away. It'll be frustrating I know, but I suggest finding another vet for a second opinion.

I've never used this solution, but I think that some dogs can be sensitive to the neomycin in it. Not sure about cats though.
And I'm pretty sure that it's a med that should be used for only a week or so, except in rare cases.
I'd call the vet back, and explain all of this as it's very possible that she may be allergic to it.
BUT, if the vet already thinks she may be allergic to it, but STILL calls for you to use it..it may be time to call a second vet.
Good luck with your kitty!!

Take the cat to a second vet. Let them know the full regime of treatment the first vet did, and see what they have to say.
Good luck with your Kitty.

My cat was prescribed Tresaderm long time ago for ear mites. When he had a ear infection in June he got prescribed Panalog (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display...
Go to another vet for a second opinion.

If you don't have time to look after an animal properly don't get one! Think about the animal not yourself first!
Take her to a different good vet (for the cats sake) and actually do what they say and the cat wont suffer because of your neglect! Don't joke about it either (scheduling)!

No. What you need is to do what the vet told you. It's clear to me that you don't like your cat as much as you claim.
