People say they won't go to a vet because it would cost too much, what do you think costs would be?

Far too many people say that won't take a cat to the vet because it will be too expensive and they can't afford it.

Let's do a reality check.

Everyone, regardless of your views on costs, regardless of whether you are inclined to not take a cat to the vet because you think it will cost too much or you take you cat to the vet and deal with cost later, please answer the following questions for me.

How much do you think a basic office visit would cost?

How much do you think a yearly checkup with basic blood work would cost?

How much do you think it would cost to deal with ear mites on a cat?

How much would you expect to pay for diagnostics to find out why a cat is losing weight?

How much would you expect to pay to treat a cat with a Urinary Tract Infection?

This depends a lot on where you live. I live in downtown Washington, DC.

How much do you think a basic office visit would cost? Short exam here is $45.

How much do you think a yearly checkup with basic blood work would cost? Exam, shots, and blood work is $275. Also, yearly dental adds $150 but is very important.

How much do you think it would cost to deal with ear mites on a cat? Just the medicine? I don't know. $30?

How much would you expect to pay for diagnostics to find out why a cat is losing weight? Well, bloodwork to start. $125. If a basic blood panel shows nothing, they will run thyroid panels. $55. If bloodwork reveals nothing, then you get into xrays, ultrasounds, etc. Hundreds of dollars. I've experienced this.

How much would you expect to pay to treat a cat with a Urinary Tract Infection? If it is uncomplicated, antibiotics will be $20-30. If it is a male cat with a blockage, you're talking surgery and special diet for the rest of its life.

Most people with a cat should know what a visit costs. They should be able to pick up the phone and call their vet and get a price. And I can tell you that any vet office will give you an estimate. Now will people do this call a vet and tell them their cat has a problem and what to do. Or just walk in without an appointment and get the cat taken care of, I don't think so. Do they have the money, I don't know either but most have computers, internet service and most likely if they have that they all have cell phones, etc. But never the money to take the sick animal to the vet. They mostly want a home remedy to fix a very sick cat. Do they know what they are getting into when letting their cat have kittens or what can happen when a cat goes missing? I don't think so. So things we can help here but illness is not to be taken lightly.

The reality check should be.... Will I give up what I have to and get my kitten/cat to the vet and have it taken care of. What can I do without till the vet is taken care and my cat/kitten is healthy again. Will I make that sacrifice?

I have found a very good vet who I think works hard to keep costs down. So I am answering from the perspective that I would take my cat to him.

    1. Possibly nothing, possible 5 to 20 dollars. I'm not kidding. I have brought animals to him because I was concerned about something, and if he ends up just looking at them and saying, "Oh, she got stung by a bee" or whatever, he doesn't necessarily even charge anything.

    2. I'm going to guess somewhere around 25???

    3. My vet would clean the ears for free and charge probably like 10 bucks for the medicine, if I remember correctly. (One of our cats had ear mites once, but I can't remember what the charge was. Couldn't have been too bad because I don't remember being all shocked or anything.)

    4. Depends on what blood tests and stuff they have to run--maybe 20-40 bucks

    5. Depends on what kind of medicine, probably 50 or under

How much do you think a basic office visit would cost?

$35 for an exam with nothing done. Shots, $18 each, snap-combo for Felv/FIV $56, blood draw $10,

How much do you think a yearly checkup with basic blood work would cost? About $100, with shots, about $150.

How much do you think it would cost to deal with ear mites on a cat?

I spent $160 & 4 months getting rid of ear mites on 2 kittens that a breeder shipped to me. I tried every cure the vet had, & finally purchased Revolution

How much would you expect to pay for diagnostics to find out why a cat is losing weight?

    Probably $275 to $500

How much would you expect to pay to treat a cat with a Urinary Tract Infection?

Exam and cost of antibiotic. Probably about $75

Bob, you left out one really important fact. The unemployment rate is very high and well, a lot of people are out of work. While accessing the Internet has gotten really cheap, health care is going out the roof; not just for people but also for pets.

When people get on here and ask for help, it's not because they are rich and wish to become even richer by saving vet bills, but because they really CAN'T afford the prices of most vets. Instead of chastising those that can't afford, we should help them find alternative options like their local humane society or another affordable option.

My work this year has been very sporadic, and I have eaten at the dollar menu a lot just to be able to get my kittens their shots, so I for one don't like it when people look down on those that can't afford to take a pet to the vet.

Before you can judge someone, you should walk in their shoes first.

Just my senseless two cents worth.

Vet visits typically cost around $40.

With the problems you are experiencing, your vet bill will be a few hundred dollars. If you don't want to spend that much on a vet visit, you shouldn't have a pet in the first place.

Why not let your fingers do the walking and ring around - use the telephones book and the yellow pages - find out the answer yourself as these differ from state to state and from town to town and practice to practice in the same town.
