How is the swine flu different from a regular flu?
The effects of the swine flu that are reported on the news every day, but the information and symptoms and recovery rates etc etc all seem to me to be the same as the regular flues that come around every winter.
And before someone says “H1N1 kills people”, remember that every year, thousands of people die from other flu strains, but those other flu strains don’t get the same notoriety as the swine flu. What gives?
I don’t see why getting the swine flu is any more dangerous or potent than any other strain of flu. Am I missing something?
So, based on the first response, the effects of H1N1 will be the same, per capita.
So there will still be X number of deaths per every 100 infected, it’s just that the number of infected is going to be greater, but the number of deaths will go up proportionately, but will still be X/100.
I think I get it now. I’ve also ready some others’ questions and answers and it seems that it will not be any worse than the usual flu that goes around.

you're absolutely right.
swine flu, and most cases of regular flu, are subtypes of the influenza A virus. every year there are multiple different subtypes of the flu virus sweeping around the world, with names like H3N2 and H1N1.
it just so happens that this year, the subtype of influenza A is called H1N1 (the swine flu virus) and is a little different from the other subtypes of flu. because it's so different, not a lot of people have immunity to it. that means a lot more people get infected by it this year than people got infected by last year's seasonal flu.
while the H1N1 virus is not particularly deadly, and causes the same symptoms as the regular flu, since so many more people this year will get the disease, probably more people will die than is typical.
if you get the H1N1 virus, your chance of dying isn't any higher than if you got any other flu. however, since a lot of people will be getting it, a few more people than normal will die from it.
