Medical Billing Classes?

Im wanting to take some classes for medical billing or coding. The only way I could do it is through online though. I dont want to take a class from a crappy or scam school. Does anyone recommend a school thats good to take these classes in? And also will they tell you right on their website how much a class will run? Im a single mother and I dont have alot of cash but would love to go back to school for something.

I really want to warn you about doing this, because it is VERY hard to find a job doing billing or coding straight out of school. I went to a community college for this and it took me 2.5 years to find a job doing mecial coding. I even found a message board for coders where many of them were complaining about not being able to find a job either. There were jobs available, but they all required experience! So I worked at a low paying receptionist job at a doctors office for that 2.5 years. If you really wanna do it, just be aware that it will not be easy to break into the field. I have heard that careerstep.com is a good choice if you decide to do it. they have a lot of info on their site.

    Hey Punkrockergrl09,

I know exactly which online medical billing course you should take but as a professional medical biller, coder and business owner there are a few things you should be aware of and you should ask yourself before you enroll in any course.

Are you aware that there is a difference between Medical Billing and Medical Coding? That being said,

Which are you really trying to take a course?

Will you become certified in the profession you choose?

What are your goals after completing whichever course you choose (get a job or start your own business)?

Are you aware that both professions are hard to break into? While you have the knowledge to do either job most employees still will not consider you for employment until you have up to 2 years of hands on experience.

The cost of either course varies depending on how the courses are put together and the time to complete them also differs. For medical billing you can complete a course in a matter of weeks while coding could take you up to 2 years (depending on the course and the designation it could be as long as 4 years).

I am not trying to paint a bleak picture for you but I want to make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you enter this profession.

Well I wish you the best and here is the online medical billing course that I suggest everyone take that enters this industry and the best part is that once you complete the course with over 70% they also allow you to sit and take the Nationally Certified Medical Billing Professional (CMBP) exam.

    The cost is as follows:

Deluxe Medical Billing Course Certificate Program = $699.95

Complete Medical Billing Course Certificate Program = $599.95

Medical Billing Course Certification for Medical Billing Employment = $499.95

Medical Billing Course Certificate Starter Program = $168.00 (Pay-As-You-Go Option)

Here is a great online medical coding and billing school http://www.careerstep.com/coding/?uid=a1403 It is about $2000. The department of labor states that coding related jobs are predicted to increase by 18% before 2016. Getting into a healthcare job is a good idea; especially with the way the economy is right now.

Poof's response is right on. Because of advancing technology, medical coding software continues to change from day to day and that's why so few new coders are hired even as interns. Anyone who suggests that the medical billing training will get you a quick job, is just misinformed. Perhaps consider taking night courses at a local junior college for a 2-year paralegal certificate which will get your foot into most major law firm, sans any actual experience.

    Good luck!

My sis is a nurse's aide, she said the girls she works with who do that billing stuff are all super mad cause they don't really make any more than the aides, and they spent a bunch of money going to school to do that. Before you make up your mind what to do, talk to some people in that field in your area to see if it's even worth going to school for. A lot of hospitals or nursing homes will help pay part of your tuition to go to nursing school if you commit to work there for a set period of time. Good Luck
