When did your child first try peanut butter? Were u as scared as me?
My son is officially 14months old as of yesterday. Several children at his daycare bring peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, but I am really scared that he will have a bad reaction. So, how much did you give them the first time and did you have any preventive measures? Im just scared he will be allergic or something and that would scare me so bad!

Around one. I was scared, So i just started out with a bite. There was no reaction and she was fine. Does peanut allergies run in your family? If not then just start off with a small bit, maybe a lick of your finger. You could even put some on her skin, if she does have a server allergy to it then she should get some sort of rash on her skin. But I would say, start small. Most kids are fine to have peanut butter. My daughter loves peanut butter jelly sandwiches. She is 15 months old.

I gave it to my son around 17 months old because he was going to a new daycare where lots of kids had PB in their lunches. I wasn't all that worried honestly because he'd had all sorts of foods that were prepared using peanut oil and on the same surfaces as peanut containing products and never had a problem. He had no other allergies and I know the allergic response is generally mild the first exposure or two (if they are going to have one) so it wasn't like he was going to suddenly drop to the floor and stop breathing. I just gave him a PB&J sandwich for lunch and watched him closely afterwards. I know infant CPR too so I guess that helped.

My kids are now 2yrs and 3yrs. My husband gave my son some peanut butter on his toast. He was 13 - 14 months at the time. I didn't know about it till the following day. Since my son was fine with it we let him eat it. One day he had a peanut butter sandwich. My daughter was over a year as well. I wanted to wait a bit with her just because at that point I was a lot more experienced. My son had moved his sandwich to the floor and when I came back around the corner to see how he was doing my daughter was eating a piece of it. I took it away and she was completely fine. I just kept a really close eye on her for the rest of the day. When she was fine later on that evening I felt much better. So now they both eat peanut butter on sandwich's, toast and stuff like that. Definitely something to be cautious about. I don't blame you one bit for worrying. =)

My son never actually ate any peanuts...my father picked him up and within seconds my son had the imprint of my dad's hands in hives. My dad had eaten a handful of peanuts earlier, so I had a sick feeling that was what it was. The next morning I was thinking it had to be a fluke, so I put a small dab of peanut butter on the back of his neck, washed it off and he got a hive in the spot. I made the appointment and, sure enough, he was allergic.
I can understand your fears, because while chances are the your son will NOT have any issues, peanut allergies are a very scary thing. If you are really concerned, put a dab of peanut butter on the back of his neck, leave it for a few seconds, wipe it off and look for hives. Not real scientific, but it may ease your mind.

the first time my son had peanut butter.. he was about 11 months. i wasn't home he was with his grandmother and i came home and saw him eating the ritz PB crackers. i flipped out. both me and his father have food allergies (raising his risk to 75%) but in the end he was fine. he's 19 months now and he's allergic to Cinnamon and possibly coconut (not to seriously yet). he loves peanut butter now though.
im allergic to grapes and his father is allergic to pineapple and coconut so i was very scared. im scared with my duaghter to even though shes only 3 months and not eating yet
i find it odd the daycare is letting kids bring PB&J... usually they don't.

We don't have any allergies in our family. I live 2 blocks from both the fire department and the rescue squad...so I did let him have peanut butter at around 8 months. I can't remember at what age I gave it to our daughter.

My child had to see an allergist for her asthma, so they tested her for all possible allergies. I didn't have to worry about a peanut allergy the first time she tried it.
I suppose that is an option if you are really concerned.

I was as scared as you!
I followed the ped's advice with #1 and waited until after 2.
With #2, she was about 15 mos. old.
Peanut butter is a choking hazard too (sticky), so spread it very thinly and use lots of jam to "wet it up."

They were both tiny. My grandma did the introduction, I was more scared of them choking on the piece of toast. Peanut allergy didn't even cross my mind.
