By definition any race can be racist, as racism is simply discrimination or prejudice based on race. It does often seem, however, in popular culture as if only whites can be racist. To be honest, I've had many of the same thoughts you have. I believe black history month, black colleges, and black anything are discriminatory by definition, and therefore racist by definition. I've heard this argument before, but I've never heard an argument against it. The one thing I often do hear, however, is that these things are in place to counter-balance racism against blacks. That is - because there is so much racism against blacks, special circumstances are sometimes necessary to combat that racism. I don't necessarily agree, but I do understand the argument.

As to your point about being proud to be white - I'm white but I'm neither proud nor ashamed of it. It's simply the color of my skin and nothing more. Perhaps it sounds cliche but it's true. I believe if I was born black, or yellow, or polka-dotted that I would be the exact same person. Would my life have been the same? Perhaps not, but I can't sit here and tell you I would have become a different person if the color of my skin was different. I'm incredibly happy with who I am, mostly because I've spent 31 years thinking about and becoming who I am. Hardly ever in that time have I thought "I'm white so...." Funny enough - the only exceptions are the things you mentioned, as in "I'm white so I guess black history month doesn't celebrate me." Here again though - because I'm happy with who I am it doesn't really bother me. I hope this helps and good luck.
