momma cat and kittens?

i took in a stray cat today and her kittens. i have a few questions about the momma and her kitties.

i know the kittens aren't more than a couple days old.

how long untill i can get the momma cat fixed?

how long untill i can get the kittens treated for worms?

the kittens bellies are big and round. could they have worms?

when should i take them to the vet? (momma cat is still very nervous about having kittens moved around)

she seems to be nursing fine. she is very attentive to her little ones. i think she's gonna be a good momma!

any other suggestions are welcome! thank you!

I think that Your cat will be excellent momma. If she doesn't let anyone to touch her cats, that mean that she wants to protect them, but that also means that babies are just fine. Just be sure that You are giving her enough milk and food (much, much more than usually, she needs to feed herself and her babies, don't forget that). The fact that their bellies are big and round means only one thing- They are well fed up! :)

Let the nature do the thing, and after Your kitties are 3-4 weeks old (after they open their eyes), You can take them do the vat for control, but until that let their momma take care about them, and You take good care of them. Having a kitties is greatest thing in the world, enjoy as much as You can! :)

Mama needs a spay appointment for 8 weeks from now - by then the babies will be eating solid foods and won't be nursing on her as much. Make her appointment now though - this time of year vets get booked up so this way you won't have to wait to get her spayed any longer than necessary. And of course she will come into heat and can get pregnant even while nursing her babies!

The kittens probably have worms, as does mom if she was a stray. Wormings for kittens generally can't be started until they're about 2 weeks old or so. While I would normally suggest a vet visit for mom and the kits ASAP, I'd give her at least a couple days to settle in and trust you before you do that. And then of course pack them all up together in a big carrier.

The best thing you can do for the momma and her babies is feed momma the best food you can afford. The higher the protein, the better - it's best for both her future health, and her milk production. A great food - as it's going to be great for the kittens when they begin weaning - is Innova's EVO - its suitable for cats and kittens, and that's what I feed all my foster kittens. They thrive! Momma should have canned and dry, and lots of it, as she's got a very high need for calories right not. If you can't afford the EVO, and need a budget brand, then get her Petmart's Authority brand, the kitten formula. Canned preferably, but at least some canned. Again, as much as she wants to eat.

Change their bedding daily, and wash it in the hottest water you have. That keeps fleas, mess, and germs to a minimum.

As long as she's nursing the babies, and they seem to be gaining weight daily, then all is well. Start touching and handling them as soon as she'll allow, so that they grow up knowing a human's touch.

If their strays AND only a few days old, you should get them to the vet asap to have the checked for anything like worms or disease. The last thing you want is your heart broken.

I'd say leave it about a week or so until you get momma cat fixed; the kittens will be able to survive for the night after a few days with out mum.

I think you can also get the kittens treated more or less as soon as possible- if not within the next week or 2- I would say phone the vet and ask him/her about it. As their so young it might be hard to get them treated right away.

As mum is still very nervous, I would say leave it a little longer than a week to get them sorted at the vets- and when you do, take them all together. Mum doesn't panic and the babies don't get scared- also mum will be able to trust you.

It's so nice to know there are people out there who don't just pass by stray animals- I know they have a loving home!

    Good luck!

I don't know about anything else, but I know that their bellies are big and round is a good thing. It doesn't mean that they have worms. It means that they are being feed enough. So you are gonna want their belies to be big and round for a while. You should let the momma cat get used to the idea of her kittens being moved and then take them to the vet, mother right beside them. When the kittens get older and the mother starts playing with them and biting and kicking, don't worry, she is being very gentle.Remember, mother cats will be very overprotective. And the daddy cats will kill the kittens and the mom will do anything to stop him.So keep your cat from getting outside because she will get in a huge catfight with the dad.And if she dies you have to feed the kittens goat milk every four hours. So keep that from happening.

Oh,and she will probably stare out windows at night to see if she can spot the father cat.Don't worry about that, shes just watching.

Your best bet is to call your nearest vet TOMORROW, and ask him/her these questions. If the mama cat has fleas, the longer you wait to take her in, the more fleas you'll end up with. While you're at the vets, getting the "new family" examined / treated, ask the vet about how soon it's safe to spay the cat. At this time, the vet may want to worm the mom & the kittens.

Just put everyone into a carrier and take them in........Once the vet has examined everyone, and you have answers from "the professional", you'll have a better idea of how everything should work.

Hope this helps......Good luck to you and your "new family".........
