It's really the lactose in it. Low-fat cottage cheese can be tolerated by most in small amounts and is recommended by vets that promote a fresh or holistic diet. Low-fat, plain yogurt can also be tolerated and makes a nice treat as both are low in lactose content. Many vets that have a holistic practice promote the live bacteria in low-fat (plain) yogurt as beneficial but again, not in large doses. If your Yorkie is sensitive though, then why bother at all, ya know? My Pug on the other hand is a young 14 years of age and has always enjoyed an occasional treat of either of the above two mentioned. Dr. Richard Pitcarin is a reknowned veternarian who expanded his practice and spent another 2 decades studying canine nutrition. He also wrote a couple books on the "Natural Health of Dogs and Cats". He recommends both low-fat cottage cheese and yogurt and separates them from the dairy bad boys.

Everyone is right. Dairy products in general are bad for dogs.

Dairy products are bad for both dogs and cats. Dairy as in "from a cow." Canines and felines cannot digest lactose. If they could we could just feed them cow's milk when they were pups and kittens and they would get all their nutritional values from it no problem...but we need special "milks" for them.

If you want your dog or cat to have diarrhea then go ahead and give them cow's milk products.

Dairy products are bad for all dog breeds for the most part. Most cannot digest lactose and its not species appropriate passed the weaning stage.

Dairy products are bad for all dogs, because they can't digest dairy.

It's not just yorkies, it's most if not all dogs. They cannot digest lactose, the sugars in milk. It gives them upset tummies, gas, diarrhea, and sometimes throwing up. I know it's tempting to give them whatever they beg for, those faces are perfect for making you feel guilty, but it's really for their best to not have them.
