Any decent reason why I shouldn't commit suicide?
I'm 24, and am a thesis away from finishing my MA degree. I moved back home, have no money, and no real future. I'll be faced with student loans, getting a minimum wage job that I will hate, and being miserable. There is not a single career that I can envision having and being happy at the same time. Oh, and also, I'm a drunk. Is it not worth it just grabbing a grand or so from family and friends (or the gov''t), and going on a Leaving Las Vegas-esque farewell party?
Oh, and quitting drinking isn't really an option. If not for the drink, I would have done this about 15 years ago...

Man do I hate people like this who say do this and do that. I am kind of in the same boat you are. I have feelings of worthlessness all the time and also think about ending it. I just got a job as a personal trainer and if this doesn't work then I prolly will finish it. You just need to find a reason. You should start by not asking the people on yahoo answers. If you are going for as MA degree then obviously you have some hope for a better life. But if you cant find something to keep you going then I guess there is no good reason to not commit suicide.

Aww, James, I feel you. But throwing away your life? What have you seen to decide that taking your life is in your hands?
Your reason not to commit murder is this: you need to challenge yourself. You are human. You are capable of dealing with anything. You have to find it in you to turn this around. You know how... it might seem far-fetched, but relax and think about it. There's always a way, but it all only starts if you think positively. You're 24... you've got a whole life ahead. Quit that drinking-- you can do so much more than put shitty water straight into your liver. Think about what you like. Misery is a state of mind. Change how you see the world. Think that good things will happen to you. Believe you will get your happiness. Self-analyze. Death is not a option. Good luck!

Congrats on being near the completion of your degree. 24 years old? Wow, James, your whole life is still ahead of you. WHY do you think you have 'no real future'? Your future is what you MAKE of it. It sounds like your REAL question is "Why am I here?" and "What is the real purpose of life?"
Without an answer to these questions, life could appear pretty dismal. Why am I working my b~tt off to get a degree? How will I pay off my loans? How do I stop drinking?
One of the greatest kings that ever lived felt that all of life was meaningless, empty, and vain. If you read through the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon DID more, owned more, and lived more than almost anyone else in history. I would encourage you to read through this great book and learn the message of truth it contains. It is summed up in Chapter 12, but read the whole book, not just the ending. He also was experienced with drunkenness, there are no answers there either...
At this point, you still have an element of control over your life - You say you're a drunk, so STOP IT! You say it's NOT an option, then that would be ONLY by your choice, because hundreds of thousands of alocholics who were WORSE THAN YOU have made this choice. Through alcohol, you are choosing to run and hide from your problems, not face them head-on. You say you'll be faced with student loan debt- what is the responsible thing to do? PAY THEM OFF!
Part of the problem is that you are entirely SELF-FOCUSED - You are going through some tough times, but they are not any worse than what hundreds, thousands or even millions of others have gone through. Suicide is the ultimate self-centeredness. It demonstrates you are concerned for no one else. The people you will hurt through your selfish act will have to 'pick-up the pieces' and continue once you leave. Parents, siblings, friends and relatives will all be affected by your selfish action.
Life is about more than just about I, me, my, and mine. Get your eyes OFF of yourself, and look for someone YOU could help. There are people out there FAR MORE NEEDY than you are. They have no health, are deeper in debt, work at jobs they hate and yet still lead productive lives. Get real, it's time to grow up, and start GIVING BACK to the world. Many people have sacrificed for you to get you to where you are. Time to get a backbone, and GROW-UP.

You've been watching too many movies @Las Vegas farewell. Get a grip of yourself and finish your thesis. Don't get drunk which obviously makes you too sober and destroys your ability of having an optimistic view of life. No life is worth committing suicide and definitely not someone who's just about to receive his/her MA degree.

Well, if you are depressed, be open and honest with someone you trust, and try things that make you happy--but not drinking. Fly a kite, watch odd and funny movies, spend time with old friends. These things will change your outlook on life. Don't give up, the harder thing is to live despite all the frustrations and obstacles that come your way. Finish up that thesis too. It might also spark up old passions, and make you realize what is so important.

No, it is not worth it. Go to AA and get sober and you will feel much better and have a much brighter outlook on your future. You think you have no future, and you will not have one if you do not quit drinking.

Because it's stupid, and you'll never know how great life really is if you kill yourself. Stop being a cry baby.
