My friend says that .270 is the pig in the middle between 25-06 and 30-06!

He says that 25-06 can accurately shoot light bullets for varmints, and heavier ones for deer and is faster and flatter shooting than .270! .270 doesn't have the sectional density for very large heavy game like the 30-06 does with heavy bullets, but recoil is the same with similar bullet weights like for deer! 30-06 ammo is more common! And 30-06 can shoot bullets that are just as light as .270 can!

No reasons whatsoever why the 270 would not be a good choice. There is only one side note of mention worth bringing up; the 30-06 can match the performance as it is the case upon which the 270 is based; and, since the 30-06 was and is used as a military round there are numerous manufactures of said caliber. If you want to do quite a bit of shooting and plinking you can buy surplus ball ammo therefore a heck of a lot cheaper than 270. If you reload for the 270 then you can negate this minor problem to a large degree.

Of course the .270 is great, as well as the big brother it was derived from, the .30-06. Those two account for more dead deer than just about any other. The .270 will perform on all animals from coyotes to moose with the right bullet. I hunt with the .30-06, but pretty much just as many use a .270 with great results. It is simply going to be around forever, no matter what new "whiz-bang magnum" comes out.

270 is perfect for anything smaller than elk and OK for elk and moose with the right load. I won't use it for Buffalo, though.

.270 is a necked down 30-06, so power is similar. It's just limited to 150 gr, where 30-06 goes to 180 and higher. With the same weight and type of bullet, the 30-06 may have slightly more energy at ranges less than 150 yards, but since the 270 is narrower and has a better ballistic coefficient, it's velocity and energy are greater as the range gets beyond 150. 270 has slightly less drift due to wind, too.

You need 200 to 220 grain bullets for large Brown Bear species like the Grizzly or Kodiac, or the larger Bison. The 270 will not handle such heavy bullets.

Other than that, mostly only 30-06 addicts assail the 270, seemingly for daring to alter a sacred 30-06.

I would consider the .270 Winchester to be an excellent choice as a rifle for all except the largest and most dangerous game animals. And if a person never intends to be hunting those animals anyway, why buy something more powerful?

You would have to be out right RETARDED to dislike the 270 winchester. It is very accurate at long range, it has "flat" trajectory, and it has the power to take big game animals, like Elk, deer, bear and moose. Who dose not like the 270 win, yes there are some better hunting rounds out there but this will get the job done too. This is not my favorite hunting round but it is a dame good one.

    Who dislikes the 270?

I don't care to own a .270 Win. because it isn't chambered in any military rifles. I like ammo interchangeability between my "hunting" rifles and the rifles I shoot purely for fun (surplus military rifles.) 30-06 or .308/7.62x51 will do anything .270 will do- and I can buy cheaper surplus ammo!

.270 is a fine cartridge. It just doesn't fit into my logistics.

Why would I want to use a rifle caliber with all the perceived (felt) recoil of a 30-06 without actually shooting a 30-06 and deriving the full benefit package therefrom?
