You haven't told us if the car is under your name.

If it is then withhold it until your sons learns, if it isn't then there's nothing you can do.

He's an adult at age 19. The big questions are:

    1) Is there a car loan and if so, is it only in your son's name (no cosigner)?

    2) How is the insurance policy written?

If he is making payments on the car it should only be in his name. If you cosigned for the loan, you are a part owner of the vehicle. Have him refinance the car loan to remove your name. It would remove you from any liability should an accident occur. If he is unable to qualify for the loan, the vehicle needs to be sold and any equity needs to be used to purchase a used vehicle in his name only.

You and your son need to read the insurance policy to determine if there is full coverage for any person driving the vehicle. Be sure he is NOT on your insurance policy because his actions put you and your assets at risk. Even though he is your son, it isn't worth it. If it is your insurance policy, he has already disrespected you by disobeying your order.

If push comes to shove, he can take a bus to college or he can move into a dorm on campus and walk or bike to classes. Millions of students do it everyday. This is a very serious issue.

If he is paying the insurance and gas on the car there is not a lot you can do since he is an adult. I assume the car is in his name. However if you are paying for any of that then tell him next time he lets anyone drive it you are no longer paying for that. I find it very strange he would let his friends drive it while he sits in the passenger seat. Have you asked him why he does that.

Well, here is my suggestion as my parents just went through this with my brother only his girlfriend was driving his truck. It is in my mother's name, they pay the insurance, for the gas and any and all repairs that ever need done to it. I told my mother that instead of complaining about it, take the keys and let him walk. If they don't have a new respect for what they have until they don't have it and have to struggle on their own, they will never listen nor care.

Needless to say, my brother will not let anyone drive his truck under any circumstances. He even said, "If I have to walk again because of this I can only slap myself at that point."

The car is yours so take the keys and let him walk, catch a ride with friends or ride the bus. If a friend has an accident with the vehicle, it may not be covered by your insurance, but you would be responsible for paying for the damages and injuries.

he is 19 years old, maybe you shouldn't worry about what he does that much. he is not a child anymore. but of course if you are paying for everything, for him to learn responsibility you should let him know you are not going to pay for any damages to the car, if he doesn't stop letting others drive. and let him go to school without a car for a day, so he would understand the importance of it...

Take the keys away if the car belongs to you and is in your name. Otherwise, let him do his own thing. Make him pay for his own insurance, gas, and car payment every month. You are his mother, but not his ATM and STUPID is not written across your forehead.
