Why does the government in the UK pay people for nothing?

Not a lot of answers in government so I figured I'd ask here. I see more questions about benefits here than in any other catagory anyway...

I've seen a lot of questions in various catagories talking about benefits people recieve in the UK. It seems that there are benefits for everything. Are these all automatic? Like if you have a child you automatically get a child benefit no matter how much you make or are they a form of welfare for low-income people? I'm just curious cause I live in Europe and it seems that people pay outrageous taxes in European countries - at least compared to the US and I really can't understand why the government taxes people who work so much to give it away to others. I realize the US does this too but I pay about 10% of my income to taxes and if I worked in Germany it would be 49% and I'd have to pay a 19% sales tax on almost everything I purchased.

I think it's just different societal views.

In the US it seems to be very me focussed. This is my money and I will spend it on me!

In Europe people do pay more taxes but these go on to help and support people who are having difficulty or cannot support themselves. So in countries like the UK and France for instance, they pay a national insurance tax that goes to pay for medical care for everyone - so it doesn't matter if your a multimillionare or your a single parent who has been made unemployed, you will be entiled to the same amount of care.

The european system isn't perfect but I prefer it over the american system. I prefer to live in a country that looks after its citizens better, who gives everyone the same access to medical care, who gives people who have worked hard but have become unemployed an income to support themselves whilst they are inbetween jobs. It's just more of a caring way to run your society in my opinion.

basically the answer is yes, for example I work full time (in a minimum wage job) my partner works part time - 8 hours a week as he stays at home and watches our son, we get approx £500 from the government every month. But I do pay approx 20% of my salary on taxes and 20% on almost everything purchased.

It is a good system but it does get abused which is a shame, for example if you were a single mother you would get money paid out to you (for general living expenses) plus you would get all your rent and council taxes paid for you, so of course you then get mothers who have a man living with them (usually their child's father) they pretend he doesnt live there AND he works full time. You also get the same benefits if you cannot work due to illness, in some cases you can even get a brand new car every 3 years on top of having everything paid for you and money for general living, as you can imagine this gets abused as well, people "pretending" to have cronic back pain that kind of thing.

Anyone in the UK gets child benefit regardless of what you earn. We do have a bad benefits system where it seems any scrote can claim for anything it's not fair to be honest. I work full time and only claimed job seekers allowance once and I was treated like crap for claiming it.

At least I don't sit at home in good health claiming money and benefits for me and four kids when I could be out working.

    It's a twisted system.
