Different denominations have different interpretations of what it means to "speak in tongues". Some denominations (like the Pentecostals) believe that speaking in tongues shows that the speaker has been endowed with the Gifts of the spirit.

Evangelical churches tend to believe as per 1 Corinthians 12 that the Gifts of the Spirit are diverse and speaking in tongues refers the more general ability to speak in different languages in order to spread the Word of God across the globe. In 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 it is explained that the Gifts of the Holy Spirit may manifest themselves differently in different people.

Now that we understand that The Gifts of the Spirit (speaking in tongues is included in these) is not absolutely necessary, now we can move on and discover why some people choose to actually speak an unintelligible language.

The answer is quite simple. People speak in tongues in order to try and draw closer to God. Sometimes people cannot find words in their known language to communicate to God, whatever strong emotion they may be feeling, whether it be joy, praise, or excitement. Therefore, they slip into a mode where they do not have to be confined by the definitions of words, because when they are attempting to praise a God that Scripture teaches us is indefinable, we are actually limited by our limited vocabularies. Simply put, speaking in tongues (or gibberish, using your terminology) allows people to shut off or ignore the analytical functions of their brain and process their emotions on a more raw and rudimentary level.

Think of speaking in tongues as a form of worship. Some people sing loudly when they worship, others fold their hands and close their eyes. God already tells us that the Gifts of the spirit are diverse, and the way some people (predominantly Pentecostals) choose to interpret these gifts is through the physical act of speaking a language utterly and wholly unknown to them.

    Hope this helps.

The Biblical example of 'tongues' were actual languages of the time, not gibberish. The type of 'tongues' practiced today by some evangelical groups is neither Biblical nor actual languages; it's just gibberish. That's why the vast majority of Christians neither practice it nor believe in it.

Paul says plainly that it is better to speak a hanful of words and be understood than speak a thousand in tongues and not be understood. The whole crowd that belives that gibberish to be tonuges has misinterpreted the scriptural meaning of tongues heavily. idk what that gibberish is, but I severely doubt God would endow you with any ability of that magnitude if only to make a fool of you. Tongues without inerptetation is not tongues (1 Corintians 12).

Consider that on the time of the Holy Spirit approaching the ones believers within the ebook of Acts, The complete identified global at the moment had come into Jerusalem. Many specific languages had been reward at the moment. I consider that's the motive of tongues. For the ones of combined languages in order that they might be offered with the gospel. Jesus plus talking tongues is a fake instructing. We consider that Christ died for our sins and that our sins had been important of such an terrible dying that Christ paid for. It is a unfastened reward that can't be earned and through believing that it was once the blood of Christ that our sins are washed to ensure that us to have entry to the thrown of The Almighty. Speaking in tongues is a reward similar to the opposite reward's God offers us as members of the company frame of believers(you and your church). We are all no longer pastors, missionary's or singers. As we soak up God phrase for the period of our existence we opt for up features defined in Galatians five:22," But the fruit of the spirit.) We come to narrate to a misplaced global maybe through our variations as believers. The scriptures speak approximately us being the frame(palms, legs, eyes, ears, and many others...making up the complete frame). The talking of tongues turns out kinda vain if the entire believers there talk the equal language. I am no longer pronouncing I do not consider in tongues. I have certainly not heard it performed.

I personally do not believe in that. I do believe in speaking in tongues and I do believe it is a gift that God gives to people to be able to converse with people with a foreign dialect so that they can witness to them. Not all the falling down and jabbering stuff. The Bible says their must be an interpreter. If people are all jabbering at once then what good is it doing anyone. Anyway, we all believe differently and this is just mine. The people who do believe this should do what they believe.

We can only speak in tongues if the Holy Spirit allows us.
