Does it make sense to spend $3000 on a veterinary bill for a single domestic cat when you can't afford to pay?

for an MRI that you need yourself?

Update:

Not a rhetorical question. My sister just made that choice.

Just curious, is this a rhetorical question from someone that does not even own a cat?

Edit: No, it does not make sense to spend $3000 that she does not have and forgo medical diagnostics for herself.

When you take in any other living creature, be it a cat or a dog or a child, and you take responsibility for its well being then yes, it makes perfect sense. I would pay a veterinary bill that undoubtedly included much life saving treatment and surgery before I would pay for a MRI for a simple reason - those tests are fairly useless except in very specific circumstances. If the insurance carrier will not cover it and the hospital's medically indigent program/charitable branch (all Catholic hospitals have those) then it most likely is not medically necessary. So, a life vs a test. I'd go for the life.

Also, MRIs are NOT that expensive. You can compare costs for them here http://www.comparemricost.com/ and then haggle (yes, haggle) to lower it even more. That site I just linked to gives you tips on how to do that, too.

You should look into Care Credit. it is basically a credit card that can be used for Animals and yourself. My husband and i had to get one b/c our Teacup yorkie got extremely sick and had to have several tests and stay at the hospital for 4 days. the bill out outrageous. Since we didnt have extra money laying around we looked into Care Credit. Id advised you do the same :] I hope this helps.

Good Ghod! What a vet bill! I think some of these incredibly greedy vets should be taken out and shot -- or else subjected to their own treatments, which would probably be worse. So sorry your sister drew one of those greed hogs. Her love for her kitty does her credit, but the vet who did this to her should burn in hell...and probably will.

I say talk to the doctor and ask for a better price and tell him that you cant afford it and that you love your cat. If it doesnt work try somewhere else.

If you love your cat and she needs it, then yes. But if you are unable to give your cat the care that it needs, then I suggest rehoming it or surrendering it to a shelter where it can be taken care of.
