Would you kill a pigeon to end its misery?

I hate pigeons... all they do is coo and poop!

BUT earlier today when i went outside, next doors cat had caught and half killed a pigeon. It was cooped down, all the feather off its back missing, mangled and mauled... with the cat picking at it....

I knew the pigeon needed to be killed, it wasn't likely to fly off and live happy ever after!

But there was no way i was able to actually kill the thing.

Would you have been able to?

Would you have killed it to put it out its misery?

Update:

- Well then HOW would you kill it? bare hands? whack it with a shovel? stamp on its head? slap it senseless with a plank?

Update 2:

- I knocked on the cats owners door as i was going to dump the problem on him and let him deal with it!

but he wasn't there... so i just left it...

the pigeon and the cat were both gone by the time i got back, so i don't know what happened to it.

its playing on my mind now!

i felt mean leaving it there, but i couldn't kill it with my bare hands.

I would have killed it myself, with whatever was handy that would be quick and merciful. but I don't blame you for being unable to do that. Different people have different tolerances for that kind of thing, and we all bring something good to the mix of humanity in the process. The cat was doing something natural to a cat, the bird died not long after you saw it alive.

Try not to worry too much about it, you took compassionate action in looking for someone to assist, and checking in again when you were unable to find someone. The fact that it was gone when you checked resolves the issue.

Go forth and feel okay about this. Next time, if you can manage it, you might want to put it out of its misery, but if you can't, do what you did this time, look for someone that can help.

Yes I would have killed it, but as previous people have said it is a difficult thing to come to terms with. Leave it to die painfully or put an end to it quickly. I have done it many times so a bit hardened to it now, but the first time is the worst but knowing you have saved it being in pain for hours on end is well worth the anquish

I don't like pigeons much myself but yes I would try to kill it. The only problem would be that I don't have any experience in killing animals. I suppose breaking its neck would be best but honestly I could only guess as to how to do it. I think I could do it without feeling any guilt or remorse.

i live in NYc so I feel your hatred for pigeons. But I spent my summers in a farming cuntryside town in the caribbean at grannies. when animals go thru much suffering, she taught us we are justified in killing it. take a shovel and whack its head off.

I can't stand to see an animal suffer

If I can see no way to save the animal I have put the animal out of it's misery

Yes, did it about 3 weeks ago for the exact same reason.

I could only kill an animal in pain if I had a gun to shoot it. I just could not kill it with my hands or anything else.

well, i think it would be the good thing to do, but i couldnt do it. mainly cause i cant stand dead animals.

but, i wouldnt feel guilty about not doing it, because although killing it would be the good thing to do, not killing it isnt a bad thing.

If the animal was clearly to badly injured to be saved, then yes - I would.
