Traveling with 3 Cats...how did you do it?
We may just be moving to San Antonio Tx. That's about 15 hour drive for us. We have a big truck and we're going to get three big crates for our cats to each lay in. We'll probably get harness leashes to take them out to go potty....but how was your experience? Is there anything you wish you would have done differently?

I would say definitely bring a litterbox along so they have the stuff they are used to using. They might not find a surface at a rest stop they will want to use.
You can either try taking them out on the harness and leash and setting the box outside. Or you might want to just set the box on the floor in the truck during a stop and let them go in that. Some cats will get too distracted or excited/ stressed outside in a strange place and won't focus on accomplishing the "task".
Make sure to pack a litter scoop, some plastic bags to throw away waste and some paper towels and maybe some kind of spray bottle with water or cleaner somewhere handy that you can use while on the road.
Or just have a litterbox constantly available to them in whatever crate / shelter they 're travelling in. That can actually be easier. then you just stop to clean them out.
With certain cats i had the problem that they would not use the box when I wanted them to during a stop. then when we start driving again they have to go. and sometimes would go in the carrier.
And I now have 1 older cat who needs to go more often. so what I do now is I set up a Sturdi Double Show Shelter in the back seat of the car. You can get a hammock for it that makes it more room for 3 cats
I know other people who travel with large crates with room for a small litterbox in the back of the crate. and a bed in front. (& in large hard plastic crates like Petmate Sky Kennel or Vari Kennel, they come with a water dish that clips to the inside of the front door -- that is a handy thing to have . you can just put in a small amount at once. )
Or I know another cat show exhibitor who has these pet strollers http://www.catfancygifts.com/item1123ST001.html You can lift the shelter part off off the part with the wheels & set it on the back seat. then there is room for a small box for litter in the back of the shelter thing Her cats travel in this thing all over the place.
Do not open the door of the truck unless cats are safely in their carrier or harness & you have hold of the leash.
Be sure to get them used to everything ahead of time-- get whatever type of crate or shelter you will use and set it out open in your house. try to get them to explore it, toss a treat in for them etc. Put a soft cushion or blanket in it -- if you're lucky they'll start hanging out in it.
Also get them used to a harness and leash boefore the trip. Start by putting a harness on for very short periods then increase the amount of time -- give them a treat., play with them, feed them dinner etc. . then try it with the leash. Just let them wander around and you follow... bring along some treats to coax them.
With any kind of training thing i prefer small, low carb treats like freeze dried chicken or dried fish. so the cat is not getting fat on treats.
Good luck!

Well, we always travel in our motorhome so our cats and dog were fine with that... How many people are going? If no one is in the back seats, you could probably just let them out of the cages. Otherwise, I'd suggest just keeping them in the cages and offering them lots of water, and stopping every couple hours to give them a litterbox. Some cats wont go the bathroom outdoors, so make sure you do bring a litterbox and litter just in case!
Good luck!

We go to shows - usually taking 1 or 2 cats but its no difference. They ride in carriers and when we stop to eat lunch or supper, they are allowed out in the car to stretch, look around, eat or drink and use the litter box.
When we are on the road again, they all go back into the carriers. Do NOT sedate cats for traveling - they usually end up with more negative reactions to the meds.

only took 2 cats though, nothing went wrong until they fought on food remember bring all the food you can get they might be hungry and will go cranky and meow loud and scratch the whole drive.
