Twelve years ago, I got a ticket...?

The 'year expiration' sticker had fallen off my license plate. I had the proper registration, but the officer gave me a ticket anyway. I went to court and the case was dismissed. Twelve years later, a collection agency is calling for me to pay the fine! I cannot seem to convince them that this is a bum rap! I have been in touch with the court & they say their files do not go back that far! If I had paid the fine, I would still have the canceled check -- (I never throw anything away!) -- but all I have is the original ticket! I received nothing from the court when the case was dismissed because I had the proper registration -- tho' I DO still have the registration from that time. How do I get these guys off my case? (I've sent the court and the collection agency copies of the original ticket and the registration.) The collection agency says that there is no 'statute of limitations' when the court is involved! They are calling several times each day! They are threatening to take me to court for the unpaid ticket -- but won't tell me when the court date is. HELP!

Update:

WRG: The court provided no 'paperwork'; the case was just dismissed because I had the proper registration.

Update 2:

#203: I WENT to the court with my ticket and registration. That's how I learned that their files do not go back that far! The Court People had no idea why this had surfaced 12 years later! Or why it had been put into collection! It's as big a mystery to the Court People as it is to me! The Court says they would have suspended my driver's license for an unpaid ticket and this was never done. The whole situation is just weird and has taken on a life of its own!

Well the court must have turned it over to them, these bottom feeders didn't get this account by looking in trash cans, so somebody in the court system turned it over.

You need to go to the court in person with your collection letter and find out which office authorized it

The collection company also has to provide you with the office (and name) of who turned it over to them.

Once you find that out you go to that source and ask to see their proof that you owe this money, if they can not provide you with that information then they do not have a case

    SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!!!!!

What happens when you don't pay a fine? License suspension until you do the state wont waste money on a collection agency to go after a minor fine.

Call the bluff tell them to stop calling you take it to court and by law they have to stop calling ad go to court if they want to pursue it.

If you couldn't find proof you owe anything, How could anyone else?

Always get paperwork form the court. This is not the court doing this. It is a collection agency that old fines have been sold to. Just tell them to take you to court and if they choose to do that you will be notified. The reason they don't know is because they haven't filed yet and don't have a court date. This is a civil not criminal matter.
