Ku Klux Klan questions concerning care of the elderly, widows and children?

I would like additional information concerning the KKK. I am talking about the early/original KKK from during the Civil War. I remember as a small child hearing that when the KKK was started one of the reasons was to help the elderly, widows and children to survive the hardships of war, to offer food and blankets - without expecting payment of any kind. I also heard that husbands that were rather "heavy handed" to their wives were often "shown" how it felt to have someone beat the crap out of them.

I am not for or against the KKK, I don't know enough about them to have an opinion. What I am looking for is information on the early KKK movement, hopefully to provide some history about the things I heard as a child.

I am not looking for information that covers the corrupt things the KKK has done, I can find that information on my own.

If anyone has done a study or has read about the early history of the KKK and can provide links to sites that may cover what I am looking for please post.

I am not even sure if caring for the elderly, widows and children was ever a part of the original plans of the KKK, I would simply like to know if there are any articles or books that might mention such matters.

Thank you for your time

Update:

Hi Daisy,

In response to part of your statement; but evil fills their hearts. I never knew it was a requirement to be evil in order to join the KKK. Thank you for letting me know that.

Update 2:

Thanks Patti,

At least I am not the only one that remembers hearing stuff like that from my childhood. Now if I can just find that in writing somewhere. Even at my late age (60) I am going back to school, and this is something that I wanted to write about.

Update 3:

Katydint,

In you comment "consider the source" YES I think I will, considering it came from several of my gr grandparents and others gr grandparents. And I never said it was accurate, only what I heard, so I guess unless you were or are a member of the KKK you have to take what you hear as accurate. That is why I am asking for written proof, as no one that would know for sure is still alive.

I have never really done any research on the KKK, just know that they were a radical and brutal group who terrified citizens with their evil and racist acts. But...that being said, I did a little searching and came up with this surprising article that appears on the klan's website. They seem to think that they were perfectly justified by the formation of their extremist organization. It's very interesting...and probably answers most of your questions....just have to remember who wrote it....

The Klan began in the South after the Civil War and during the Reconstruction phase. It was never really intended as a social organization to help widows and such, but they may have benefited from that kind of propaganda. Their real intent was to intimidate the newly freed slaves from trying to assert themselves. So they wore sheets over their clothes and pillow cases or sacks over their heads and rode at night. Eventually their "uniform" evolved into what we see today. At one point they became a powerful political power and were the dominant power in Indiana during the early part of the 20th century. If you get a chance try to obtain the old silent film Birth of a Nation. It is filled with racist stereotypes but probably accurately reflected the fears white people had during that era.

When I was a child, while eavesdropping on the conversations of older relatives -- all natives of southern Indiana -- I heard that the KKK began as a vigilante group formed to protect their communities. They were men who "put the fear of God into" men who abused their wives, children, or horses; bankers who took unfair advantage of farmers; and others who did things to hurt their neighbors. I've never found any news articles or other corroboration for what my relatives said.

I don't know if there are any articles or books about them "taking care of their own". I do know what two different elderly men told me. A high school history teacher, one year before he retired in 1975, remembered seeing the Klan ride out in parades with their flaming torches. He said back then most people where he lived owned only one pair of shoes.A person could be recognized by their shoes in many cases. He noticed many of the same shoes on some church members in his Southern Baptist Church come Sunday mornings during the services when he was looking around.

My uncle, born in 1908, remembered when he was a child that the Klan would take care of erring husbands (white men) , those who let his wife & children go ragged & hungry while he drank, womanized and beat the wife. They would wait until the husband came home at night, ride out in white hoods & robes with torches lit in the middle of the night, go in the house & pull the man out of the house and beat the hell out of him, telling him to straighten up or they would come back for more. Usually the man got scared straight but if he didn't want to straighten up & care for the family he would leave the territory and then the neighbors & church would take care for that family.

Both of these men lived in Oklahoma during their childhood.

The KKK was formed after the Civil War ended by one of the most famous cavalry generals who was labeled 'Wizard of the Saddle', N.B. Forrest. Therefore, the leader of KKK is known as the Wizard even today.

You need to web search the history of that hate group who hides their faces because they know it's wrong, but evil fills their hearts.

It's a hard pill to swallow, hearing of good acts from the hands of violent bad men . . .

I must think they were warming up on some whites 'till a black opportunity came up for some 'real action'.

    After all: "consider the source".

I have no specific info about the Klan. But I can tell you that throughout history it is commonplace for any cult, gang, criminal organization, revolutionary group, or anti-government organization to act as philanthropists to needy people in whatever area they mainly operate. That's just shrewd business practice. In fact, you could never succeed very long in any outlaw enterprise without spreading the wealth a little bit.
