Catching cat that got out?

I need more tips on getting my cat to get back in when he sneaks outside. I put some mail out and he ran out. Hes fixed and clawed.

But he does escape at times and its hard getting him back in. Food dont always work, he quit falling for that. He stopped falling for that after the first time.

Sees patience is best he finally comes back in.

If i try to catch him he runs off and even went in the street one day so im trying not to to be too aggresive

Update:

I get so scared when ehs out there hes gonna get hit by a car. The last time he did it the street was quiet but now with people going to work, taking kids to school and a bright sun in one direction im more worried.

Update 2:

well he finally got back inside after an hour.

@Sweet, thanks for the advice but hes NOT an outside cat and has never been an outdoor cat. He occasionally sneaks out. I try really hard not to have the door open very wide. I lock him up in another room if I have to move things inside or getting a package where the door has to be open wide. This morning I was trying to put out some mail but barely having door open it was hard to get the letter on the mailbox I thought he was in kitchen eating so I opened door a lil wider to position the mail better and he ran out.

Hes got tons of toys and I try to play with him often. Hes got wand toys, ribbon toys, mice, balls you name it hes got it.

It seems that what your doing at the moment is the best thing, which is patience although have you tried DREAMIES?They seem to do the trick with my cat as I`ve just moved but like you say they are`nt stupid so try not to be too over protective?Good Luck?

I'm totally against cats going outdoors, they have a shorter life span, suffer from more disease and might get involved in horrible accidents that could lead to death.

You have every right to be protective, he is your baby. Its quite challanging changing an outdoor cat to an indoor, but it works with time and paitence. You could put him in a room while you are about to sneak out (and let somebody open it after you go).

The more you engage him into activity the less love he will feel for outdoors. Get hin toys, most of them like the Laser 'pen', feather toys and objects tied to strings for him to chase. You could also get him another cat to socialise and kind of reward him from the fact that he cant meet his friends. Don't give up!
