I like adding plain gelatin to Jell-O, to create firmer, totable Jell-O pieces (using a cookie cutter or just slicing into squares). Referred to as 'Jigglers'.
I've added unsweetened coconut shreds to Pineapple flavored Jell-O, and I like small, fresh blueberries inside of Cherry, Raspberry or Strawberry Jell-O.
Jell-O recommends chilling the Jell-o (after cooking on the stove and being allowed to cool for a few minutes) in the refrigerator for 2 hours, prior to adding anything. After the 2 hours, draining any/all add-in really well is important (since the excess water may result in Jell-O that never firms up).
Jell-O says stirring in the add-ins after the Jell-O has chilled, and returning to the fridge for another 2 - 4 hours works best..so the add-ins are dispersed uniformly in the Jell-O (everything doesn't completely sink to the bottom, or stay floating on the top).

here is a recipe I do with a white cake mix. I am sure it would turn out the same with a chocolate cake. (I'm guessing?) Pink Princess Cake INGREDIENTS 1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix 1 (3 ounce) package strawberry flavored gelatin 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 (10 ounce) package frozen strawberries, thawed and drained 1/2 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease one 9 or 10 inch bundt or tube pan. Combine the cake mix, gelatin, flour, eggs and thawed strawberries. Beat at medium speed of an electric mixer for 3 minutes. Add the oil and beat for one more minute. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 35 to 40 minutes. Let cake cool before frosting or serving.
