How to write a good short story?
So we have to do a short story thing for my yr 10 English class. No theme, no restrictions... Just has to be fictional.
And I have no ideas.
I'm pretty good at English, I can write a killer essay, and critic books and novels, I can read a 200pg story in an hour, and I get a great mark in every part of English.
Except in fictional writing.
Because I have absolutely no imgaination.
And consentquently, no idea what to do for my story.
And I need help.
How do you guys write a good short story? Any tips/guidelines etc?
Cause i need it.

Here's what I like to do:
- listen to your iPod. Sometimes the greatest inspirations for me come when I'm just chilling on my bed
and a certain song triggers my imagination.
- In my opinion, one of the most intriguing aspects of a story are its characters. What situation they're in, what they like/dislike, basically what makes them who they are, and how they interact with other characters. Have fun with it, and make them unique.
- Anything can be the basis of your plot. You can get an idea from a video game (like a short story that I am currently trying out), a book you've read, TV show or movie, a magazine article, something you've experienced in your life, an unusual thing that happened to you recently, etc. etc.
- Try and think about what you can write about when you're not really required to pay attention to something too much, like when you're in the shower, or about to go to sleep, etc.
There's my two cents, just helping out someone who's having the same problems I have very often!

Use some things you have experienced, ideas from things you have seen or done. Use something as an inspiration. Also, make sure you do some foreshadowing, it makes for a great short story. You don't need to give the whole background to the event your story is based around, just explain it subtly through the thoughts of the reader. Use concise language but also make sure to use description and expression. If you can say what you said in a paragraph in only one sentence, change it around.

Ponies,
I give this little hint to a lot of people on YA and they seem to like it. So, I'm going to share it with you, too.
Think of things you like and dislike. Create a character that will take away things you like, and then a protagonist that will fight to keep it. The same with dislikes. Create a character who is keeping everyone down, and then a protagonist who will fight to get it back. This could be world wide or just in your state or community.

Choose a topic you like and/or have a good amount of knowledge on and do whatever you want. Remember realistic fiction is fiction too. You don't have go crazy and write about faeries who attack leprechauns to spirit away their unicorns.
