Atheists: Do you agree with the social message of Jesus?

This question is not concerning whether you believe he existed, or the deity or miracles aspect. I am looking for clarity on whether you agree with the social message ascribed to Jesus.

1) Loving everyone

2) Not taking revenge on things done to you

3) Applying mercy to law (ie, mitigating factors, being merciful versus strict legally)

Update:

@ Hal Roach: This was the main grievance the Jewish leaders had against him, that he didn't push for the normal strict version of applying the law. Remember, the adulterous woman about to be stoned. Even the story of the Samaritan at the well spoke of it. That is what Christians believe Jesus added to the message of God: mercy and grace. This is the message of the life of Jesus, and paralleled in the fact that God was sending his Son to be sacrificed?

    1) It's the best if we could all do that.

    2) I think it's fine to do revenge. Pain is different on anyone and there are pain that only be reduced by revenge. Not everyone is adult enough to understand the meaning behind it. For example, a child gets dirt on his face from his buddy in accident. Is that bad to revenge(throw dirt back to his face) or can he understand that was an accident & be fine with it? He's only a child, how can he understand it? I think it's a good idea to specify the meaning of "revenge".

    3) It really depends on situation. But we're all humans, so why can we judge each others to decide who should be killed? Well, I guess that's why laws exists...

This is somebody who said you should gouge out your eyeball at the sight of an attractive person (Matthew 5:29), he yelled at fig trees (Mark 11:14), said to give away all of your money (Matthew 19:21), and hate your parents (Luke 14:26). So my answer is no.

Why did you pick those 3 particular things, and not any of the particular things I listed? But even with the 3 you listed:

    1) It's impossible to "love everyone". You can certainly be a responsible citizen and practice courtesy, but love is a personal thing and again it's impossible to apply that emotion to everybody. If you "love everybody", then you love nobody.

    2) No, I firmly believe in taking revenge, particularly if the person continuously proves himself to be a trouble maker. If somebody wrongs you, then it's completely irrational to pretend like it never happened.

    3) Where did he even say this?

Absolutely, Jesus and other religious figures like Buddah were very socialist and it's kinda Ironic when you see those Right-Wing Republican types throwing his name around and bashing liberals and socialism, when they don't seem to understand that Jesus would want them to help the poor. I believe that Jesus is a symbol of what humanity should be. I feel that a lot of the time Christians twist and turn him out of context to fit what they believe when it suits them.

This isn't me saying that I believe in God or anything, but religion as a topic.

Mickey, you can't be more wrong, you ignorant moron. Many of which you listed aren't atheists, and you completely forget that religion has caused many more deaths than you listed.

For the question, yes I do agree with some things, not the religious parts, but his social aspects. Christians are supposed to be followers of Christ, I have not met one, nor do I know anyone who has met one. I don't have a problem with Jesus, I do have a problem with his so called followers though.

Some of the messages attributed to the mythical Jesus are not so great. He recommends killing and/or flogging slaves - see Matthew 24:45-51 and Luke 12:42-48.

    Matthew 10:34

"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

    Matthew 10:35-36

"For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law — a man's enemies will be the members of his own household."

    Luke 12:49-53

"I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

    Luke 14:26

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters — yes, even his own life — he cannot be my disciple."

Christians say that their mythical Jesus Christ loves us, yet he will have us tortured forever if we don't say or think the right magic words. That's not love; that's extortion. Christianity is a cult that emphasizes a story about what happens after we die -- whether we end up happy forever or tortured forever. The mythical story of Jesus' crucifixion is a horrible, sadistic story of human sacrifice. Christians even celebrate it by ceremoniously drinking his blood and eating his body. This is ritual vampirism and cannibalism. The idea of blood sacrifice for vicarious atonement (i.e. the mythical Jesus dying for other people's sins) is immoral -- punishing the innocent to free the guilty. But, it's good marketing.

The things Jesus is credited with teaching are fine from a moral and ethical standpoint. It's the rest of the Bible that's a moral, ethical and historical problem.

The biggest problem I have with agreeing with you people on anything, is that you tend to twist what I say out of context and/or add more to it to try to make it seem I said something I did not. And I'm getting darned tired of it.

tho i don't believe he existed, his message is a good one...

other then his views on "sin" like the "believe in my god or suffer" and the anti-gay thing, his supposed message was generally good

Yes ... but he was not the first to espouse these virtues.
