Why was Marijuana use made illegal in the US and the UK in the first place?

Anybody know? It was legal for centuries, then suddenly not. Makes no sense to me, but surely somebody out there may know the relevant history.

It was made illegal in the US around the middle of the 20th century because the paper and cotton industries were worried about cheaper products made from hemp (which comes from the same marijuana plant.)

SO...they launched a now infamous smear campaign against marijuana and how it makes you insane. The campaign culminated with the propaganda movie, Reefer Madness.

Soon afterwards, it was outlawed, and "the war on drugs" was started.
