Is it illegal to report something stolen?

Is it Illegal to report something stolen that was never actually stolen as long as there is no monetary gain? I understand there is a law concerning "Filing a fraudulent police report" I would imagine that this would come with a fine if found guilty. I am more looking at the penalty for doing this. Anyone know what would be the consequences of doing this?

Filing a false police report, as well as FRAUD. How can there be no monetary gain out of this? In the least there is an ATTEMPT at one, because you want the stolen item or value.

  • Yes, filing a false report is a felony in most places. That means jail is a possibility.

yes, filing a fasle report is a felony, not as bad as reporting a murder that never happened, but still falls under the same category unfortunately and that means, in some cases, jail time.
