Dry skin can be caused or aggravated by a nutrient deficiency or a food sensitivity. I would suggest looking at the ingredients in your current dog food. Avoid ingredients like corn and wheat as they have been linked to poor skin condition because they are not easily digested and can sometimes aggravate dog allergies.
You could try changing his food. I suggest Natural Choice Sensitive Skin in Venison for dogs with poor skin condition. It contains high levels of omega 3 and 6 in combination with zinc which is why it is the only company that guarantees an improvement in skin and coat. I like to treat skin problems from the inside out, so rather than using topical ointments, try to find the cause.
Hope that helps :)

It could be a lot of things, but one occurrence is not enough worry about food allergies.
It sounds like it might be a hot spot which is generally a reaction to an allergy or irritant. There are soothing sprays generally called something like "Hot Spot Soother" that make a big difference. Ice helps too. My Mom swears by vinegar, but I think that would sting. Aloe, Tea Tree oil and topical nummers seem to have the best bet for the buck.
Constant hot spots tell you that you have an allergy problem to solve, but not necessarily a food allergy. I had one dog allergic to cats.
Talk to your vet, but most human allergy medicine works just fine on dogs. Often all you need to do is just put a tiny pill in a treat every day and you will be fine.
It doesn't hurt to try a limited ingredient dog food for a while.
This is getting way ahead of your situation, but for one 'seriously allergic to everything in the world' dog that I had, switching his diet away from all dog foods was the only solution. It may sound complicated but I never did anything as wonderful for him ever. He was ten years old when I started this diet and it took 3 years off his age. He started pulling out his old toys and playing again. I mention this because I I wish I had done this the first year his allergies were detected at age 3.
Search the web for the raw diet and you will get the requirements. We didn't go completely raw, but pretty much he got a portion of the meat we had for dinner + broth + oat meal + stewed pumpkins and yams + different veggies all mixed together so that he couldn't avoid the veggies. And he got a carefully chosen daily vitamin. At first we did blood checks every other month to be sure we were not missing anything but we stopped that once we were confident.

Flea bath, yea he could have fleas, get a flea comb ($.99) and check for flea. If fleas get on a flea treatment. No fleas yeas it could be the food, upgrade the food to a wheat, corn, soy, free food. something other than chicken based is good. (No meat by products).
Get on a monthly flea treatment, a good quality food, and if the itching continues add as fish oil sumplement.

It could be allergy's. Best bet would be to take him to your Vet and be looked at, possibly have blood work done to find out why. Also, maybe you are rinsing him enough after a bath.

I suggest a thorough bath every few days untill he gets better, rub your hands through his coat and massage his skin in the places he's itchy while your bathing him. Hope he feels better! :)
