Should vehicles be banned from colleges and universities?
Exhaust fumes from a vehicle contain 100x more toxins than secondhand smoke does (don't believe it; go sit in the garage with the car running). Riding bicycles is a proven healthy practice. If publicly funded Universities and Colleges are so concerned about every students health that they have to ban behavior then wouldn't it make more sense to ban all vehicles from a campus?
I ride a bicycle to class so there's no reason I should have to smell stinky un-healthy car exhaust on my way to class just because there are those that have chosen to not practice the healthy lifestyle of bicycle riding. Does that make it harder to be to class on-time; well hows that any different than forcing smokers off a 3-mile wide campus to grab a smoke between classes? Worried about not having shelter and catching pneumonia? Hows that any different for those that smoke? The campus is too far away to get there without a car? Hows that any different than the ultimatum set in place for smokers at a smoke free campus; to either stop smoking or be burdened with finding a place clear off campus (IE. Find a place to park your car off campus or don't bring it at all.)
You tell me; Should vehicles be banned from all colleges and universities? Or should everyone just chill out and learn to be nice and accepting of each other?
In comes the famous Anti-Smoker line: It's not that we're banning you from owning a car, you just can use it on campus.
*can't

It's an option to smoke while being a college student. If you are a college student, it's not an option to get to class or not.
You think Iowa City has space and bike racks for 30,000 bikes? Or 30,000 parking spots off campus for people to park and then walk? You think Ohio State has 50,000 spots? Gonna ride your bike when its 10 below zero and is in the middle of a 10 inch snowstorm?

If you can find a way to make it so that all universities - or all public unis - have a place for the thousands of commuter students they normally have, to park off campus, and also to arrange shuttle buses for such students...
Plus to arrange for faculty and staff parking and shuttles from off campus...
Plus considering the needs of the disabled for transport...
Then sure, why not ban cars? But the issues of finding parking off campus for all of the people who do drive in from afar, plus providing them with accessible transport, are not at all either easy or cheap. But sure, if you can find a realistic way to resolve those issues for every public uni in your state, then you could do this. But can you find a realistic way to do this? It's unlikely you could.

There are several reasons for the offending "box", all wrapped around your State Law which requires certain information in obtaining a driver's license or I.D. card. Contact your State representative - the only way to change the system will be to update the Law. You won't eliminate the check box, but through your efforts your state may be the first with a "Mixed Race" box that will catch on nation-wide! Good luck, and keep fighting for your rights.

As crazy as it sounds professors have to drive to campus, and some students work off campus and need cars... And even crazier, there are schools in areas where it is not feasible to bike year round (aka where it snows and is icy)
