Newbie Cook - Need help with oven temps?

Hi there. I'm trying to learn how to cook. I can make basic stuff (very basic stuff) and if someone smart hadn't invented microwaves I probably would have starved years ago.

Anyways I'm trying to change that and learn a little bit. I've stumbled upon a recipe for sausage quiche that sounds good and simple enough for me to try, but the recipe left out some details and I'd like some help with that.

This is a recipe for sausage quiche and it contains the stuff you'd think it contains - sausage, eggs, cheese, onions, corn, milk, etc and the recipe says to bake in the oven for 30 minutes. It doesn't say how hot to make the oven. Perhaps experienced cooks know this stuff and the person that wrote the recipe figured it didn't need to be said, but I'm a noob that can burn bacon and eggs in less than 30 seconds if left alone in the kitchen without a guide. However if i can follow instructions to the letter, my meal usually comes out edible.

    After reading the recipe at the link you gave, I'd go with a 350 degree oven and simply adjust the cooking time. That means to keep checking for done-ness a bit before the recipe's allotted time and thereafter. Use the tip end of a clean thin bladed knife and stick it in the center and if it comes out clean (not covered with or coated in filling), then it is done.

    Remember patience and practice. :)

    The rule I use is if a recipe doesn't list the cooking temp, then I set the oven at 350. I would also suggest going to the Food Network's web site and doing a search for the dish your making. Typically they will all cook at about the same temp. So, my quiche though is baked at 375, but my oven tends to run a bit cool. If this is your first time baking, set the temp to 375 and start checking the quiche at about 1/2 the way through the baking time. You may find it's done a bit faster than 30 minutes. You check the doneness by touching the center of the pie very lightly to see if it's set.

    I make a breakfast casserole with eggs, cheese, sausage, and milk. It's time and temperature is 350 degrees for 35 minutes. I'd think that 350 at 30 would make a good start, then test for doneness. Like with cakes, I insert and remove a toothpick into the center of the casserole/quiche/etc and evaluate the texture/moisture of what comes out with it. Have fun cooking!

    Use 350F, but quiche is fairly forgiving when it comes to oven temp. All you want to do is not overcook it, so test it starting at about 25 minutes, using that "inserted knife comes out clean" test. Don't worry if the filling still appears a bit too liquid when you take it out of the oven. If the knife comes out clean it's done enough, and the filling will continue to cook a bit after it's out of the oven. They are telling you to let it sit before serving because if you serve it too hot it will merely fall apart when you try to cut a wedge out of it. Quiche is actually better when warm than when hot.

    I did a quick search of "Quiche Baking Temperature" on the Food Network and found that

    most quiches are between 350 and 425F degrees in the oven.

    Then I contacted my lady friend, who has run a B&B for about 14 years, and she told me that she bakes hers at TWO temperatures:

    She starts them out at 425 and then lowers the temperature after 20 minutes to 350 to continue and finish off cooking the quiche.

    Since this recipe does NOT call for a "deep dish pie crust", I would recommend that you bake it for the 30 ,minutes OR UNTIL SET at a temperature of **375F**.

    When you go to buy your "Pet Ritz Pie Crust", you'll find them in the frozen section, and there are TWO types: regular and "deep dish".

    Since this recipe doesn't specify, and you're baking it for 30 minutes, go with the REGULAR and NOT the "deep dish pie shell". BTW, they usually come in packages of 2 frozen pie crusts.

    well it is 7:20 here now so i am thinking if it is an hour till you leave put the oven as low as you can and heat it more when you get there if it will be more that that take it out and reheat it when you get there
