Most religions have marriage or something similar because of the need for monogamy for child-rearing and other elements of stability.

While marriage may be a somewhat artificial construct, especially when you factor in divorce (and similar), the idea is that if you are "simply" co-habituating, you don't have a clear intention for staying together.

The question is: if you plan to stay together, have kids... then why not get married (or similar)?

Marriage gets you tax breaks. It also gets you legal rights, such as power of attorney.

It also acknowledges the difficulty of disentangling mutual property and of child support.

People that don't believe in marriage do not have good relationships. They will not tell you that they don't have good relationships; they will tell you that marriage is no good.

That is your opinion. If men and women want to get married, who are we to stop them?
